Peanut Butter?

Can babies have peanut butter, say on toast or rice cakes?

I've tried googling but I keep reading mixed messages. I know they can't have whole nuts but would smooth peanut butter be ok?

This weaning lark is confusing Grin

Smooth peanut butter is fine, you can buy some brands with no added sugar and salt.

Yes they can. The old advice was to wait in case of allergies but they've since realised that exposure makes that less likely. So you're probably finding a mix of older and more up-to-date sources. But they can have it.

Peanut butter is fine I think from weaning age ( NHS website As long as there's no history of food allergies or other allergies in your family, you can give your baby peanuts once they're six months old, as long as they're crushed or ground into peanut butter )

My ds and dd both had peanut butter on rice cakes & bannana for the start of weaning

My friend's sister researched this in depth because her child had severe allergies. Apparently in the middle east where dairy isn't so available it is a very normal thing to do.

The latest advice is to give it early on in the weaning process (if no reason to expect an allergy) as lack of exposure makes problems more likely.

Great, thanks everyone. At least it's one more idea for breakfast or lunch Smile

There are also other nut butters that have a lot less salt. More expensive though!

Not all peanut butter has salt in - I use the Meridian one and it's just peanuts. Both my DDs love it and have had it since the start of weaning.
