drinking water

I've been weaning my DD for about 3 weeks. She's formula fed and I've been trying to offer water regularly. However she's very reluctant to take and just spits out. I'm using a cup with spout and have tried diff ones. Does anyone have tips how to incourage her to drink more.
She's still getting 32 oz of milk but I am expectoing this to drop as she eats more.

Try giving her water in a bottle. Remember there's water in food too so don't worry too much about intake. Great idea to try diffrent cups - keep trying more. Good luck

I used to give some water on a spoon at mealtimes until my ds ggot the hang of the beaker as well as giving cos he wouldn't drink from the bottle in between as he was too full

Keep offering her water - I always thought my DS wouldn't drink never took more than a sip from a cup. Last week he had a bad tummy upset and obviously got a bit (not seriously) dehydrated because suddenly he started slurping for England. Now he's better he's not really interested so I think they perhaps know what they need - though obviously they need to be offered it and shown.

I had this prob with my ds.....i never thought he'd drink ever....but I bought a doidy cup and hey presto.....drinks water no worries, some does end up on bib, but he always belches, so some must be going in the right place! Just keep trying, and don't panic as I did.....asking everyone I knew how much their baby drank.....must have come accross as a bit strange/paranoid!

Emprexia · 09/03/2007 22:47

I'm having that problem. I've cut milk completely out of DS's second meal in the day, and am trying to get him to take a drink of water, and its a nightmare.

Thanks everyone.
Will keep at it, think I've been a bit spoiled, my DS 3 took water really easily so with DD I'm like whats wrong.
Good to know others in same boat.

Hmmm, sorry to be controversial (sp?)

But IMO changing cups and switching to botttles and such will just confuse your little one.

With everything as a baby these things take practice. I would choose a cup and stick with it, keep offering water and sticking to the same she will learn eventually how to use it.

just my opinion and experience.

good luck with whatever way you decide

I found that it just took a bit of time for them to get the hang of swallowing water. I gave my DD a beaker with the non spill valve removed to get her to sip. Lots of water on the bib as spitting it out gave her much fun but eventually maybe after a month she was able to use the beaker with the valve in it. I gave her sips with her lunch and she would let me know when she wanted a sip by staring at the beaker. I'm sure you little one will get there... we all did!

Try warming the water. Babies are used to warm milk so cold water can be a litle unpleasant I'd imagine!
