DS3 is 6 months and on 3 meals a day, mostly fruit and veg still. I'm not giving additional fluids and he is still feeding off me 4-5 times a day. Does anyone else give water?

I thought that it was fine to offer water from a cup with meals but the rules change so much that I may be completely wrong

I would def start giving water now.

i read or was told a breast fed baby doesn't need additional fluid when on solids but i ignored that and i give my dd water from a beaker at each mealtime. Apart from anything else i wanted her to get used to taking liquids from soemthing other than me as she never took a bottle pre-weaning.

they don't really need water, but you can offer so they can practice having water from a cup. I didn't start DD until probably 10mths on a cup and she had a harder time with it than DS who I started at 6mths.

Thanks all. Meant to say he is on 2 meals a day, not 3. I can't imagine that makes any difference though.

As long as they are still bfed on demand then most bfed babies dont need water when they start solids. BM is 88% water . Some babies might need extra fluids if they get constipated....but no more than 3-4 ounces a day is needed, even up to 1 year old.

My DD is 6.5 months, breastfed and on 3 meals a day. I offer her water from a beaker or bottle at each meal. Sometimes she seems to really want it eg. after a rice cake. Othertimes she is not interested. I also want DD to get used to drinking from other vessels than my breasts so the water seems a good oppurtunity.
