This site says BLW is for BF babies and says if your baby is FF ou must speak to health adviser.....please tell this is not the case and many a FF baby has enjoyed BLW?

many a FF baby has indeed happily done BLW (BabyAitch is a prime example), but as the Rapley study didn't specifically look at it she couldn't conclude that it was ok from her data.

JustJAMtart · 03/03/2007 10:12

phew! thanks MrsB

was getting worried there

I read the link, and the only real issue it mentions is that FF babies will need to be given water, while BF babies don't necessarily (because they can just take watery foremilk).

Hardly something you need to talk to an HV about, particularly if you have a rubbish HV.

colditz · 03/03/2007 10:12

It's because the experiment thing was done on breast fed babies. they have no information about bottle fed babies. I think it's a loadf of crap. Most health advisers will have you going from watery baby rice at 4 months to pureed roast dinner at 7 months. Which in MY PERSONAL OPINION is a load of shite.

I gave plenty of finger food and any spoonfeed yoghurt and porridge - when he has it. He's fine, and has always been formula fed.

JustJAMtart · 03/03/2007 10:14

agree, I avoid my HV as they asked me at a 20 week weigh in if I'd started weaning

Just backed away slowly saying, no..waiting till 6 months as per guidelines.

My LO was bf until i started weaning and then she decided she would only drink milk from a bottle. She has taken fine to BLW. We follow a loose routine with her milk (cos otherwise I'd probably forget to feed her!) and keep it separate to mealtimes. She has water with her meals and i keep a beaker to hand that she can help herself to throughout day.

claireybee · 03/03/2007 13:31

Sorry just reread and thought it wasn't especially clear. LO has been ff since soon after starting BLW and is fine!

DizzyBint · 04/03/2007 16:47

gill rapley has posted on aitch's blog to say she sees no reason why blw wouldn't work for a bottle fed baby in principle. it's just that her study looked at it as an obvious next step for bf babies. i expect she'll be doing some work on how it goes with bottle fed babies too.

JustJAMtart · 04/03/2007 22:08

Thanks for the posts all

good luck, jjt. i felt like i'd been kicked in the teeth when i read that bit on the dutch website... just another way to make ffers feel bad. if you look on the blog i did have a whine about it. it's in the BF and FF section, and also includes Gill Rapley's quote.

Funnily enough, the guy who wrote the website you linked to wrote to me the other day asking me to put another link on and now he's linked to mine. it's very hands across the ocean stuff this BLW...

JustJAMtart · 04/03/2007 22:36

Thanks Aitch I felt the same...DD is 26 weeks now so was just doing some reading (your blog is a Godsend ) and I read that and felt and , hence the post on here....am so relieved I can't tell you.

Just noticed, I went a little [emoticon] crazy in that post!

GingGangGooley · 05/03/2007 22:12

Aitch I am sooo pleased to read that you are in fact a FF too.

I have had a small crusade against me being a Formula feeding baby led weaner!

I do a diary on my own site and for my birth board (they asked me to do it) and I got a lot of stick from a certain lady that got a bee in her bonnet for FF as it's not the "right" way.

Incidently she swears by your blog so small smug feeling coming from me right now!

PMSL I only actually came on here to show DF the disclaimer about mentioning a certain someone after we watched a certain programme not been on for ages!

So sorry for my ramble! Yes you can BLW with FF babies as my daughter took to it brilliantly!

Good luck with it

CanSleepWeirdShifts · 05/03/2007 22:21

I think as others have said, it was because Rapley's study focussed on bf babies, the theory being that they are already used to controlling their intake moreso than a ff baby.

AitchTwoOh · 06/03/2007 00:12

hi gingang, am glad that you've got one over on your nippy boardmember... i cried and cried, tbh, when i read that ff and blw might not be recommended. of course it makes no sense, but you don't need much to make you feel bad if you're struggling with feeding etc etc etc.

anyway, i'm going to try to get together addresses of all the BLW blogs/diaries that people are writing and put them in a folder in my blog, when i get a minute. so would you mind sending me your url? my email's on my profile on the blog if you wouldn't mind being included? cheers.

GingGangGooley · 06/03/2007 20:00

I was asked about my decisions on a cloth nappy forum and why I chose to blw when ff my baby (as it was only recommended for BF) and was told my response was very good although i probably wanted to shout and stamp my feet when i first saw it!

I shall go and email you now!
