Changing to sippy cup

My ds is nearly 9 months and I've been trying to change to sippy cup at lunch times with his milk but he's having none of it. Think It could be due to it been so hard compared to bottle. I have tried two different Tommee tippee ones. I know hv says to have him changed by first birthday is best but don't know what else to try

Any advice or recommendations on different cups would be great

And he would have his water from it, but milk from a baby bottle. From what I've seen that's pretty normal, as they associate milk with the bottle (or boob!) but as they approach one the drop most of the milk feeds anyway so use the cup more and more.
Most of the kids I know aged 1-2 used a cup for water but still had a milk bottle before bed right up to around age 2. I know that goes against the guidelines, but it seems to be the norm

Ps, I also have a cupboard full of cups! There's a bit of trial and error involved until you find what works for your child

Thanks I had noticed one of them in Tesco so thought about it as might be a bit easier for him to adjust but just thought that was only option I had

You could always try a doidy cup instead of a sippy cup, if they're really not working for you.

I think a lot of soppy cups have a valve to reduce spillages, the cheapest tommy tippy ones don't. The valve makes it really hard to suck, I'd try to find one that's fairly simple.

Yer I've got that exact one but he's just really struggling with it.

We have had the hard spout cups and ds got in okay with them but when we switched to a miracle cup at 12 months he much preferred it. Have you considered a miracle cup?

Yes, echo the suggestion to try the Munchkin 360 Miracle cup. My DD took to it immediately, whereas cups with spouts were a distraction; she would just chew them.

What does DS drink water from out of interest?

Will take it but not thrilled thought would do milk till he got the idea and it was tempting to him

DD point blank refused to take milk from a cup at home. She will at nursery for some reason. We gave her milk in a bottle until she was about 15 months and now we give her milk in porridge for breakfast instead. She also has cheese and yoghurt so she gets enough calcium.

Also bear in mind that there is a big difference developmentally between 9 and 12 months. If he doesn't want to take a cup now, have a break and try again in a month.

Why was the hv recommending no bottles after 12 months? Surely it doesn't matter how they take their milk?

Have you tested the cup yourself? I threw one out because it didn't work properly - when you sucked the spout loads of air came through with the water.

There's also a 10oz one that doesn't have the handles, though I prefer this one as DD can pick it up and drink from it without me having to hold it. Plus it doesn't spill! (Unless it is thrown on the floor, then it does splash out a little bit.)

Something to do with teeth she didn't really go into it but prob will at my 9month visit but they encourage that bottles gone by 1st birthday

I do think he wants to drink himself as does with bottle and think it's just the sippy cup is so hard. Yer know they work as he tipped them upside down and it poured straight out all over
