Constipation - foods to avoid/ encourage

My GP has recommended starting weaning a couple of weeks early due to mild silent reflux so I'm preparing by doing some research.

Since changing to exclusive FF around 3 weeks ago DD has suffered constipation. It seems to be easing now but I know weaning can aggravate in some babies.

GP suggested giving her prunes to suck/chew on. Would this be a choking risk (I'm going to a first aid course in a day or so anyway) do I peel them. Can you peel a prune I never thought I'd ever need to ask that Q

Any other ideas of what to give or avoid in the early stages? I'm hoping to start with purees and then to finger foods/ whatever we're eating within reason

I'd avoid baby rice, sweet potato, potato and banana. If you are happy to offer finger foods straight off, try lightly steamed brocolli or cauliflower. Jelly (great fun as a finger food), and water melon. All really high in water Smile

Pear and plum both good. You can stew either if you're nervous about finger food. I've sometimes finely grated pear into Greek yoghurt, too.

Pear works well for my LO at getting the nappies going again...I've also used the ready made pouches of prunes too as she loves them

Great thanks for the tips. I was told by a friend to avoid fruit early on then they don't get a taste for sweet foods but that seems strange advice.

I'll probably try both purees and finger food although I imagine she will prefer to feed herself!

Another Q if anyone can answer. I know about grapes and cherry toms but do I need to avoid peas and sweetcorn for choking risk?

Avocado is messy but works well!

My DS (3) has an Ella's Kitchen Prune Pouch every day to help with his constipation. Expensive but does the job.

Haven't heard of the avoiding fruit one either. Cherry toms and grapes (and sausages) are fine as long as they are quartered, I always just gave them sweet corn and peas.

Ff feed babies should also be offered water if it is hot or they are suffering from constipation.

Tinned prunes (in juice not syrup) are cheap. I blitz/purae them, freeze in ice cube tray and add to cereal/porridge/yoghurt etc every day.

Ella's kitchen do a pouch of prunes prunes prunes. I kept them in stock when I was weaning. They came in very helpful to get things moving. I think I gave 1 pouch a week (split over a couple of days) in with things like baby porridge and sometimes just on its own. DD never had a problem with it
