Im really confused about BLW. I am petrified that my 6 month ds will choke!!
If i was to start giving him finger foods, what should i give?
If i give brocoli, do i boil/steam it till it is very soft?........Can he eat rusks by himself? I'd appreiciate any comments!

bread and hummus 'soldiers' go down easily.

And banana

absolutely not

you must state your claim one way or the other

anything else is just madness

cut veg into easy to manage chunks and steam... doesn't have to be to be overcooked, just the way you would for yourself.

have you checked the blog for ideas? www.babyledweaning.com

at six months you should be introducing some fingerfoods even if you are puree feeding so it's worth getting some ideas even if you decide not to do blw. rice cakes are a great easy to manage, melt in the mouth first finger food if you just want to test the waters.

don't worry about the choking, babies are amazingly proficiant at coughing back up any lumps that get stuck.

brocolli is a favourite with most babies but be warned.... save it for a bath night,it gets very messy!

i dont see why not? olive oil please enlighten me... i was planning on doign slop at first and then move into the blw thing... is this sooo wrong?

LOL at Oliveoil. Of course you can do whatever you want - as long as your baby is happy and well fed. My lo has a bit of mashed mush and a lot of finger foods. Has done form 6 mths. He rarely gags

oliveoil · 26/02/2007 11:00

I was taking the piss

you can do whatever you want, I did purees and finger foods at the same time

thank god! there are no hard and fast rules - he or she may show a pref for self feeding anywya when on finger foods or whatever they want to call it, i liked oging at my dd with a spoon so i knew what was gettign but thats just me - im going to be more laid back this time with my boy and encourage more self feeding.

blw is waiting til they can feed themself before strating weaning. so if you've started on puree already then it aint really blw to start giving finger foods now. yes that's me being picky..

but yes give some finger foods! don't try to make things too soft. toast, for example, is easier to handle than bread. bread tends to gloop to the roof of their mouths, whereas toast doesn't so much. maybe start with a pear? or a peach? no need to skin it, just slice it into eighths and hand it over. they'll learn to spit the skin out.

give the rusks a miss though. they're very sugary, even the reduced sugar ones. better to just stick to normal food.
