Maybe it's a daft question BUT would you? He really enjoyed it (mainly sucked at it, but devoured half of his sister's crumpet), but they seem be a little high in salt.

Make your own bread, buy tinned tomatoes without salt or just use fresh ones, & use unprocessed cereals like oats or spelt, or quinoa, or buy ones that have lower salt levels like the doves farm wholewheat biscuits....it is VERY possible to have a diet with virtually no added salt at all....we do & tbh feel much better about doing so - most of what we buy is fresh produce & we make most of our own processed stuff like bread, cakes etc...Its amazing just how easy it is....plus you start actually tasting the ingredients rather than the salt...as soon as we stopped adding salt to our cooking we stopped buying meat from supermarkets, even the "premiere" type cuts, as they simply didnt taste any good without salt .

Ill give you cheese though - my boys (DH & DS!) both love it so thats our only weak point...but it is possibly to minimise that even if you are careful about which cheese you choose: salt & cheese link ...but then its wasnt an issue for DS when he was under 1 as like I said we didnt do dairy before then anyway. That was mainly for allergy reasons...but now being much more aware of issues like this will probably do it again for subsequent babies even if there werent allergy issues.

We make our own bread, cakes etc but thought you still had to add a small amount of salt to it-otherwise the yeast doent work or something. Correct me if I'm wrong... I have never added salt either to cooking or to food on my plate so that isnt an issue(apart from the v occasional stock cube and i wouldnt give dd anything i'd put a stock cube in). As long as you dont give babies everything with salt in then i dont think the odd crumpet or slice of toast will do any harm

how on earth can you 'feel better' from having a diet so low in salt terramum?

you feel better psychologically I am sure which is why you do it but I dispute taht you would feel any immediate health benefits

Enid - I meant psychologically - there is a history of heart & BP problems on my mums side of the family so knowing mt diet is better & I am reducing my chances of having similar health problems to my mum & aunt certainly make me feel a LOT better.

Clairybee - I just dont add salt to most of what I make...eg the recipe I use for pancakes says to add salt, but I just miss it out - they actually taste better imo 0 DH made them on tuesday & followed the recipe to the letter & I couldnt eat them as they tasted too salty. Bread just seems to work - have no idea why though....I know poeple who make bread & cant get it to work without salt...

Not a food obsessive....just a money obsessive...on VERY small budget (£20-30 per week for groceries) & making our own stuff saves us loads of money...

Yes I agree its common sense really, if there is salt in things they have such small portions of ot anyway that should do no harm at all, only if you knowingly pour loads in yourself.
