Hi hope someone can help. Started weaning 5 month old month ago first tastes and all that and so far so good but little confused now as to how much and when. Here is today's routine...

8am- 7oz bottle although only 5 drunk
8.30 Baby Porridge 5 mouthfuls

12.00- 7oz bottle
12.30- Chicken and veg 5/7 mouthfuls

4.00pm- 7oz milk
4.20pm- Apple and pear puree (1 cube)

My dd's bedtime is 7ish and we have always stuck to a good routine here's where i am confused ...
If i give her a bottle before bed ie- 6.30 she will drink 7oz which is great but she is supposed to have 5 bottles at this stage but how on earth are you supposed to cram that in before bed?? and i am not going to start waking her up as i don't think i should be. Also think she is ready for us to up the food to few more cubes but what happens to milk then. Sorry if i seem little thick just can't get my head round it first time mum and all that. x

Your DD sounds like she is doing fine - i assume she is happy, settled and thriving. Forget what babies are "supposed" to do re the bottles - my DS still drinks tons of milk and he is 8.5 months - if you think she can handle more solids then offer, but milk is still the main food until they are 1.

Offer milk before solids as this is the most filling an calorific food for babies

what TM said, really...milk is the prime source of nourishment right now.....

did you start weaning at 16 weeks? if so ,that is a wee bit early, esp to be giving chicken already......

maybe if you are concerned that she is not having enough milk is stop offering solids and up the milk....

Hiya. Ya i always offer milk first as you said needs that more than any of it. Just gets so confusing. Not all babies are the same i just worry about her missing her 5th bottle but obviously it depends on what time she wakes as to if we can get that one in. She's fine.. although when we first started weaning sleep pattern was bit rough but as long as she drinks good bottle before bed she will usually sleep 13 hours. Prob worrying for no apparent reason. Joys of being Mummy hey. x

Ya started around then .. Don't worry she's only had chicken all of about 3 times mainly last week or so as i have read that not supposed to have that to early.

ok, so i guess you know that weaning should really start around 26 weeks, or so

...i guess the way forward might be to offer milk and more milk, as this sort of age can often see a growth spurt that can result in unsettled sleep and milk is the best way to get more calories in, with minimum fuss

give her the milk as priority. food things are secondary. so make sure she gets the milk rather than trying to squeeze in the solids. no need to worry about amounts of solids as long as she's taking all the milk. she doesn't need any solids at all really.

Thanks for the advice ladies. Will fill her up with milky's. Trouble is every baby is soooooo different and every body has such dif opinions of it all even the health visitors.. speak to one and they say one thing and the next one queries as to why your doing certain things. Being a new mum and all it's all a bit confusing.
