7mo dd is breastfeeding 3 times a day now. waking up, bedtime and after her afternoon nap. i may have to be away from her for a few days next month. can my husband give her cows milk instead?

i don;t think so, not until a year. i'm sure there will be someone here who will no for certain.

NotQuiteCockney · 15/02/2007 21:23

How long will you be away? She'll be 8 months then? I don't think it would be a problem, for a few days in a month.

CanSleepWontStarve · 15/02/2007 22:57

I think as a one off, and as long as she's had cows milk before so that you know she doesn't have issues with it, then it shouldn't do any harm. You might need to pump whilst you're away to keep up your supply though.

As long as there are no allergy issues, the only reason for not having cows milk as the main drink before a year is because it isn't nutritionally complete, but we all have odd days of eating junk food .

she will be 8 months by then.
i like the idea of just thinking of it as junk food for a couple of days.
she has porridge made with cows milk every morning, which she devours, so i think allergy/intolerance wise she would be ok.
thanks for yr help.

why not give formula instead? My DS has always been on Formula and HV said not to give cows milk until 12mo

paulmorelsmum · 16/02/2007 13:36

I thought it was about protein content - doesn't cow's milk have about 8 times as much protein as human milk? I assumed the reason it was ok in food before it is ok as a drink was that the fermentation or cooking did something to the protein so that babies could tolerate it more easily - but I may be wrong - perhaps someone who knows more than me will be along soon.

I have been told that there arent all the vitamins and 'goodness' or whatever in cow milk as in Formula.
Formula is designed to support the baby on its own - like breast milk - whereas cows milk, is just cows milk.
Hopefully someone will know more about this!

oopsss sorry

paulmorelsmum · 16/02/2007 13:44

Cow's milk is designed to support a cow on its own - hence presumably more of the stuff needed for muscle growth (protein) and less of the stuff for brain growth (Omega 3 or 6 or whichever it was!)

workstostaysane · 16/02/2007 13:51

so should i get him to give her formula instead?

Bearing in mind what i've been told id say youd be better with formula - but i could be wrong - perhaps someone else on here can advise...

Could you not try expressing a bit extra between now and then, and freezing it, then your DH could give her that.

Fingerscrossed2007 · 16/02/2007 14:31

cows milk is not suitable. Whenever you are not using breast milk befero the age of one you should use formula. Hope this helps
