BLW: Help me to de-stress about the mess!

Well, it's not actually the mess I mind as much as the wasted food. Lovely expensive organic produce going everywhere... I know I just have to relax and let it happen, but I still find it bothers me. I love our highchair, but it doesn't have a tray so one sweep of DS's arm and everything goes flying off the table. Any reassurances would be appreciated!

Relax as otherwise if ds develops an eating disorder you will think it is your fault for being uptight...

Lact8 · 03/02/2007 19:21

Only give DS two things at a time and then it's not a whole meal being swept on the floor

And if he does drop stuff, well do you remember the ten second rule from when you were a child and you dropped sweets on the floor?

And I tell myself its good to get a bit of dirt in their system!

How old is he?

We have a booster seat from Argos for DS2 - it was £11.99 and has a deepish tray. He's one now, and has mastered snarfing anything in front of him, but it's still easier to put him in that as he eats with his fingers and it gets messy (tonight was meatballs, pasta sauce, pasta, peas and sweetcorn, followed by banana and he Made A Mess, but ate the lot).

I'd say get a booster till he's a bit bigger - you'll use it when you go out to other people's houses too, and restaurants too possibly.

He's 7 1/2 months, so still pretty young and getting the hang of the whole BLW thing. He really does enjoy it, and I do too, but tonight definitely more ended up on the floor than in his mouth!

Oh yes, I definitely pick stuff up off the floor to give back to him, no qualms about that!

Get a dog

We have a lab, just wish she ate banana and avocado too!

AlbertaWildRose · 03/02/2007 19:48

Ah yes, the slippery foods... banana goes flying out of DS's hand. Our flat is too small for a dog though!

Ah yes, the mess. This is still my biggest frustration with blw. Do think dd is exceptionally messy though. No solution but lots of empathy!

(DD is 1 next week btw, and she has got a little better recently.)

Go to Ikea and get one of their white plastic highchairs with DETACHABLE tray - vital! We bought a Mamas & Papas highchair that we couldn't get the tray off to clean, had a really difficult harness which also wasn't detachable, therefore impossible to clean. I dragged DH to Ikea at the weekend and it's the best £13(ish) I've ever spent!

Don't stress too much about the wastage, just give DS small amounts at a time. He will get the hang of eating it rather than just playing eventually!

with banana.... cut the banana in half, peel the skin down and trim it so there's a about an inch left on the banana with a good bit sticking out peeled.... they can hold it much better.

also only give one chunk at a time and make it a 30 second rule for when you don't notice as quickly

there will always be mess or wasted food, even with purees

Thanks for your comments, everyone. I'll try to relax and just enjoy it, because it is awfully fun!
