BLWers: When did you give your babies tomato-based sauces?

DS is 7 months and BLW is going very well so far. I'd like to give him some pasta with tomato-based sauces, but I heard somewhere (can't remember where) that you're meant to wait a bit before introducing tomatoes. Has anyone else heard this, or did you just give tomato sauces straight away?

would be interested to hear what more experienced say but from personal experience with ds (8 mo) we found tomatoes didn't agree with him - sloppy nappies and less sleep (guess it was because his stomach was bothering him), one of my friends found tomato gave her dd a rash on face but vast majority of other people i know with babies similar age had no issues. think you'd soon know if problem if introduce it in controlled way - know its one of the more 'sensitive' foods (and if problem also avoid peppers as from same nightshade family)

i was advised that from 7 mo ds could have pretty much everything except honey and added salt

hope you get some more advice!

I think tomato is very tart. My kids were much older before they liked it and even then I have to soften it with plenty of other ingredients.

Some people choose to leave the nightshade family until later, but it's fine to have from 6 months.

My dd used to get a red rash where tomato touched her face, but paed said to give it anyway, and somewhere along the way she seems to have outgrown it (now 11.5 months).

Hmm, sounds like maybe we should wait a bit longer. That's OK, there are loads of other foods to try! Thanks for your responses.

i think i gave it to her in sauces from about 8 months, no particular reason for the wait, i was just unsure.

Hi

Alfie (now 10 months) had tomato sauces from 7 months. He's never had a problem with tomatoes and has some most days, but other babies I know have. I've always tried everything and thought I'll soon know if it disagrees with him!
