Should you wait until they're 12 months? Or is earlier OK?

I'm fairly sure that I've gave mine coconut (or at least coconut milk) before 12m. I'm pretty sure I waited until they wree on 3 meals a day, proper multi-ingredient food, not just a few cubes of single veg, because coconut is very fatty, and I don't think their guts tolerate too much fat at first.

My 7 month old, loves anything with coconut milk in. Use low fat variety.

You shouldn't use any 'low fat' types of products for babies (naturally low in fat is fine, but not processed to make it low - babies need fat in their diet), but normal coconut and coconut products are fine.

I thought that only applied to cow based stuff. I got recipe with coconut milk off babycentre website and it suggested low fat coconut milk. Have also seen it in other recipes.

Thanks for the replies - I'll try it out on my 10 month old. It was the allergy aspect I was worried about. I know it's 'no peanuts' until they're 1yo but I couldn't remember about other nuts. He gets eczema but has no known allergy.

Golly, never thought of a coconut as a nut!

deaconblue · 21/01/2007 19:39

Ds 9 months had a curry made with coconut milk the other day. He loved it. I guess you only need to worry if you ahve family nut allergies

deaconblue · 21/01/2007 19:40

I chose full fat coz they must process it to get the fat out and I prefer to avoid processed stuff for him.

Have to say my dd also loves anything with coconut milk in, goes mad for it in fact.

mrsnoah · 21/01/2007 22:27

Thought it was no peanuts til 5yrs?

spiker · 22/01/2007 18:17

Peanut butter is fine from 1yo and up (assuming no family history of allergy), but the actual nuts should not be given until 5yo, as they are choking/inhaling hazard.
