Stopping milk at night?

DS is showing no sign of sleeping through- or being close.

I've heard several people say that he doesn't need milk at night, and to try giving him water instead, in the hope that he'll stop wanting the bottle and sleep more.(He drank a pint of milk in the night last night)

What's your opinion of this? DS is 6 mths 3 wks, BLW'd (and eating very well)and is currently drinking 2 - 2 1/2 pints of formula a day. I don't give him juice or water, just milk.

Is it a terribe idea? Has anyone tried it?

hi dg i'm not sure how to help - sorry! maybe you can have a word with your hv? x

DetentionGrrrl · 13/01/2007 07:48

I'd rather not- she's useless at the best of times!

Well i tried offering him water last night, he went to sleep and then my hand was stuck under his head in the cot and he woke up Gave him milk in the end as just wanted him to sleep! Will offer him water again tonight i think.

Hi, i keep my 7 month old sons water bottle next to him every night as he wakes up many times but i only feed him once. When he gets up anytime before 5 i always give him water and he seems to go back to sleep, but eventually he wants milk around 5am. Water is good to delay the feed i found but hes too clever to drink it instead of milk! Carry on with the water though and feed him as a last resort...

DG - does he have a dummy? It could be that if he has something to suck on when he's used to feeding he may drift back off to sleep easily.

Hi DetentionGrrrl

My DS is also 6 months & 3 weeks old. He used to sleep through the night but started to waken when I began to wean him. Occasionally now he will sleep through but more often than not he wakens 2-3 times a night. all I do though is give him his dummy and he falls back asleep straight away - might be worth a try

I've never given him a dummy (thank goodness) so that's not an option.

I'll keep trying with the water- i really think he's drinking TOO much milk
