Can any one help? Have an 18 week old baby who I am weaning onto solids. Since we have started she is waking up 6 times during the night and I have no idea why. Am worried she is having too much/little? How much shoudl she have? And when. Was trying to use Gina Ford but it's just not working as this has been going on for 2 weeks or more. I bottle feed using Aptamil First. Does anyone have any ideas/tips for me? Would really love to hear from someone who can help!!!!

Is she still having the same amount of milk as before, no need to cut out feeds until weaning is well established. Also could she be intolerant of anything you've offered her or be teething etc ?

mummytojames · 26/05/2004 19:50

my ds was waking up that much when he first started teething so i would go on the teething how is she when she wakes in the night (happy or screaming) how much do you feed her in solids and is she still taking the same amount of milk aswell as solids sorry lots of questions
oh and how does she react to meal time and what are you giving her and is she waking hungry or just waking

Piffleoffagus · 26/05/2004 19:51

could be coinciding with teething perhaps? You could try dropping the solids and seeing if she improves if you think it is that that has bothered her....

colinsmommy · 27/05/2004 03:26

Agree with piffleoffagus and mummytojames. I always know when Colin is teething because he wakes up about that many times a night, and he started about the same age. Was worse with 1st teeth, but now only wakes up once a night with last few.

also

when do you give her solids? I'm of the idea that is best to start them at lunch time, so if there's anything that she doesn't digest well it will not upset her sleep and you will notice if it troubles her

muminlondon · 28/05/2004 11:22

How much are you giving her? You only need to give one or two teaspoons at a time for the first few weeks (once a day is OK) - up to 6 months they don't 'need' solids for nutrition, it's just about first tastes if they seem ready for it.

I remember seeing GF's book on weaning and being surprised about her recommending pear so early, because it seemed to give my DD bad wind at first (though not later). Stewed apple seemed to go down a lot better. however, I agree that the night waking may be due to something else.

mummytojames · 28/05/2004 11:25

muminlondon we tried only giving two teaspoons at a time and he would just look at us as if to say is that it so each day we doubled it until we found the right amount for him

gloworm · 28/05/2004 11:26

eslpeth, what time do you feed her solids and what solids does she eat?

Eslpeth · 28/05/2004 17:52

STARTED FEEDING HER AT 11AM. 1 TEASPOON OF RICE WITH A LITTLE BIT OF APPLE. GRADUALLY INCREASED IT TO 4 TEASPOONS AND THEN GAVE HER SOME AT HER 6PM FEED AS WELL. HER MILK CONSUMPTION WAS THE SAME DURING THE DAY BUT SHE DEFINATELY WAS NOT AS HUNGRY AS SHE STOPPED WANTED FOOD WHEN SHE WOKE. JUST DID A LOT OF SCREAMING..... DID START GIVING HER PEAR BUT IT SEEMED TO GIVE HER REALLY BAD WIND.... THEN THE OTHER DAY I WAS STUCK WITH NO RICE SO GAVE HER SOME OATS AND APPLE (COW AND gATE) AND SINCE THEN SHE SEEMS TO BE REALLY REALLY BAD. WONDERED IF SHE COULD HAVE A WHEAT INTOLERANCCE? BUT WOULD SHE STILL HAVE BE HAVING TROUBLE? UP 8 TIMES OR MORE EVERY NIGHT SINCE.... I HAVE ANOTHER BABY WHO IS 22MONTHS AND HAD REAL DIFFICULTY WITH HER. SHE USED TO JUST EAT AND EAT AND EAT AND THEN CRY ALL DAY WITH TUMMY ACHE. aLTHOUGH ALL MY HEALTH ADVISERS TOLD ME BABIES ALWAYS STOP WHEN THEY ARE FULL??? TODAY I HAVE NOT GIVEN HER ANY RICE JUST MILK. WANT TO SEE HOW SHE GETS ON!! KEEP THE ADVICE COMING!!!!!!!!!

AND SHE HAS NO PROBLEMS WITH IT WHILST I FEED HER. BUT SHE HONESLTY HAS WOKEN UP WRITHING AROUND..... SHE DOES A LOT OF FARTING AND BURPING THEN SETTLES FOR A BIT.. THEN 1 - 2 HOURS LATER SHE WILL WAKE AGAIN WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. HAVE TRIED JUST GIVING HER IT AT LUNCH TIME BUT SHE STILL WAKES. HAVE ONLY GIVEN HER APPLE AND PEAR. WONT GIVER HER PEAR ANYMORE AS IT SEEMED TO MAKE IT WORSE SO AM BACK TO JUST APPLE! IS IT POSSILBE SHE HAS AN IMMATURE GUT??? IF THIS IS THE CASE HOW WIL I KNOW!

AND SHE USED TO BE REALLY GOOD AT NIGHT..... WHEN SHE WAS TINY SHE WOULD GO 4 HOURS AND AT 9 1/2 WEEKS WAS SLEEPING 12 HOURS STRAIGHT... FEELING EXHAUSTED AND USELESS.. NOT SURE HOW I COULD POSSIBLY TURN A SEEMINGL VERY CONTENTED BABY INTO A BEAST??

Clayhead · 28/05/2004 19:06

Since she is so young, have you considered just stopping the solids for a while and going back to milk only and trying solids in a few weeks? Can you do this with bottle fed babies? I'm not sure, hopefully someone else knows, just thought it could be an idea.

Eslpeth · 28/05/2004 19:26

HAVE JUST GIVEN HER MILK TODAY AS I THOUGHT I MAY AS WELL START FROM THE BEGINNING... WILL SEE HOW SHE GOES TONIGHT AND WORK FROM THERE.... WISH THERE WAS AN ANSWER!!!

Eslpeth · 28/05/2004 19:29

OH, AND SHE DOES SEEM TO BE TEETHING BUT AM USING TEETHING GRANULES AND SHE DOESN'T MAKE ANY FUSS DURING THE DAY. ONLY AT NIGHT, DURING THE DAY SHE SLEEPS FOR AN HOUR IN THE MORNING AND 2 AT LUNCH TIME AND IS A VERY CONTENTED LITTLE LADY. SHE ONLY BECOME A BEAST AT NIGHT. MAYBE SHE'S A VAMPIRE!!?? (ONLY JOKING OF COURSE)

Piffleoffagus · 28/05/2004 19:41

when my dd teethes she makes no fuss during the day, even naps well. oats contain gluten so stay off them until at least 6 mths, only rice is suitable for a baby under 6 mths, it could easily cause bloating and wind.
if you are intent on continuing solids, try root veges and not fruit, as it can cause some stomach acid reactions.
sweet potato and carrot are usally good mixed with rice and milk
HTH

Have not given her solids yet today.. and so far she has slept since 7.30pm. It's the best she has been for days!!! I think I will stop solids for a while and see how we get on!
