My baby is 15 weeks but ive been told i can only start him on solids when he is 6 months, thing is he has started waking at 2 iish for a feed, hes a big baby. Would trying him on baby rice be such a bad thing? Anyone else fed there baby solids sooner than the "government recondmendation"?

how heavy is he? and how heavy was he when he was born?

Milk has more calories than baby rice.

Early weaning isn't advisable, because your baby's gut's not mature enough for anything but milk till he's one.

Size has nothing to do with gut maturity.

He may well wake MORE if you give him baby rice because he won't be getting as many calories as on just milk.

And it's hassle, above everything else.

Leave it to 26 weeks.

Weight really doesn't make any difference to needing solid food.

With respect, TMMJ, you don't know if he'd have waited because you didn't wait.

Equally, both my boys have been hungry babies, and went through several endless-seeming growth spurts - but they settled again on just milk. Had I added baby rice to their diets, I'm sure I'd have thought that was why they settled too though.

AitchTwoOhOhSeven · 08/01/2007 01:18

why is it that you're so keen to feed him? is it just the waking?

holiholiday · 08/01/2007 01:18

hunker .. you said the gut isn't mature enough to digest anything but milk until 12 months .. i'm confused now!

hunkermunker · 08/01/2007 01:19

Bugger - sorry - I meant six months for gut maturity. I was thinking of food being just for fun until they're one - doh!

Thanks for pointing that out - I really should go to bed!

I tried to post and it went poof! DD I weaned at about 14 weeks - I was convinced she wouldn't go longer.

DS I was bloody stubborn and refused to wean him even though he went through a phase of 2 hourly feeding day and night for a week (ooh that was hell) - weaning finally started at about 22 weeks when he started swiping food

They can wait and are better off waiting.

Oh and it is much easier for you the longer you leave it.. purees n baby rice vs handing them a banana?

AitchTwoOhOhSeven · 08/01/2007 01:24

i too have shit boobs and dd was absolutely fine (perfect, even) until 26 weeks on formula. i think your mum is encouraging you to get on with weaning, isn't she? go on, admit it...

Flamesparrow · 08/01/2007 01:25

"oooh look at him, you can see he's after some of that, he's staaaaaaaaaaaaarvin!" Friends n family can be great...

AitchTwoOhOhSeven · 08/01/2007 01:27

my mum was CONVINCED dd was famished from 10 weeks onwards... yet somehow we managed. she also had her down as teething from day one as well. bless her, she's an idiot.

nappyaddict · 08/01/2007 01:34

ds is 6.5 months and everyone thinks he is starving as well, but he does not pick food up that i put in front of him let alone put it in his mouth. he is not starving, cos i give him bottles every 2 hours as he demands them. and i know a few babies who were soley bf til 12 months, although 1 did have to take iron supplements.

right on, sister...
