8 month old doing a poo in the night - any suggestions?

Sorry - another poo question!!

My 8 month old has started waking up early having done a poo. I've tried to limit fruit to lunchtime and give stodgier foods for dinner but no joy. She has tea at 5pm, then a bedtime bottle at 6:30pm. Has anyone had a similar problem and found a solution? She has been sleeping through for a while now and this has come as a bit of a shock! Cheers

My ds1 has always done this. but he doesn't wake, so gets a sore bum! I tried everything, he's now potty trained but still does a poo sometimes.

ds went thru this a little while ago and then stopped again, didnt have to change any of his diet.

Dd went through periods like this when she was a baby - each time it lasted for a couple of weeks then stopped again. We came to the conclusion that it was just one of those things that happens sometimes, so we didn't bother changing her diet.

We went through exactly the same thing with ds at exactly the same age. I remember crying my eyes out to my mum as he was sleeping through really well and I was having to go in a few times in the night and wake him up to change his nappy. Then he was getting all unsettled and not sleeping well.
My mum just said 'it's just a phase' don't worry'. And at the time I was so upset that there was no solution and I couldn't do anything to stop it... but she was so right!
He did it for about a month, then as out of the blue as when it started, it just stopped! And he hasn't done it since!
I know it doesn't help you right now, but hopefully your dd will be exactly the same and it will stop in no time. Don't get too hung up on trying to change it as it may be something that you just can't do anything about. Just another one of those lovely phases...

When ds started doing this at 6 months my mum said that she's certain they don't do a poo and then wake up but that something else wakes them and triggers them doing a poo, iykwim. We think ds was getting cold in the night, waking and then his body would think it was morning and make him do a poo. Warmer night clothes coincided with it stopping, but that may be just a fluke???

Ahh - ANOTHER phase! Every time I think I have this mothering thing cracked along comes something else (in this case a nightly poo ). It bring back the dark days of having a newborn...

Thanks for the advice, will hang in there and see what happens.

Oh, thank goodness. This has been driving me mad - I have just started encouraging minimagic (8 and a half months) to settle herself to sleep and now she is doing a blimmin poo and all those lovely sleep associations I have been working so hard to create are out the window! Plus she gets really stroppy (completely unlike her) cos she'd rather be asleep. Ah, suppose I shall just ride it out...

deaconblue · 04/01/2007 10:35

I know exactly what you mean. They really like to keep us on our toes don't they?

Enid · 04/01/2007 10:35

mine poos in the night too but she doesnt wake up

it greets me when I open her door in the morning

bambi06 · 04/01/2007 10:44

i`ve heard tat not giving any protein at teatime helps this as apperently the protein stimulates the bowels later on in the night..you can try and see

glamourbadger · 04/01/2007 12:59

Thanks for the tip but tried that as well! I only give protein at lunchtime...

stop stressing

nap in the day to make up for it or go to bed earlier

she will stop doing it soon

PinkTulips · 04/01/2007 13:10

my dd poos on waking every morning, she's done it since she was tiny. if she wakews at 6am she poos and if she wakes at 9am she poos then. try going in, keeping everything calm and quiet, change the nappy and put him back down. you might be able to get him used to waking up later and then he'll poo later
