Weaning, why gluten free until 6 months?

DS, 23 weeks, enjoying all sorts of veg and fruit purees. Think he could do with something more filling, have bought Boots baby porridge (says on the box from 4 months) but it contains gluten so I'm not sure whether to use it. No history of any allergies in either of our families. Any advice? Also, does anyone know when you can use Greek Yoghurt?

gluten should be avoided until at least 6 months as there has been research done that shows it can cause allergies and digestive disorders. if your family has a history of allergies it should be introduced even later. if you google gluten and baby you will come up with a fair bit of stuff about this.

with the yoghurt that should also wait til at least 6 months, or perhaps longer of there is a history of dairy intollerance, eczema, asthma etc in your family.

it's best not to go by the ages on babyfood boxes. they are out to sell, not do what's best for you and your baby.

what makes you think he needs something more filling? milk should still be his main food, until he's one anyway.

Ali5.
My DD is the same age as your DS and also enjoys her purees.
I have found that some of the Heinz/Farleys cereals are gluten free - 'Sunfruit Orange' is one. You'll need to check the boxes as they state in bold if it is 'gluten free'.
Agree with DBW to hold off on gluten and diary products until 6 months. This was the advice given to me by my HV.

Thanks guys. Wasn't sure if the gluten free thing was just HVs erring on side of caution. Only thought he might need it coz I thought a diet of just fruit and veg not very balanced and might be getting a bit samey (apart from avocado and peas, everything seems to be orange or yellow!). Haven't found anything he doesn't like or has a funny reaction to and didn't want him to lose interest. As I weaned him before the official 6 months I'm just a bit wary, have held off on meat and fish too.

You can get baby rice that is gluten free as I gave it to DS. I'm surprised that anything for babies under 6mths has gluten in it as at one point there was a blanket removal. You can also get the gluten free sugar free rusks which you could crumble into his veg to bulk it out a bit.

the balance is the milk. it contains every thing your baby needs until they're 6 months. no need to worry about a balance!

the fruit and veg is just a taste here and there. best to just stick to that as you've started before 6 months. then they can have pretty much anything at all.
