BF son sicks up formula...what do I give him for breakfast?

My bf ds is 4.5mths old and I have just started weaning him, very slowly with a bit of veg. Every time I use even the tiniest bit of formula, he is sick. I am wondering what on earth I can give him for breakfast/bulk food in a few weeks' time. I have tried various formulas and I can't face expressing milk. Any ideas please?

Why are you weaning him now? It sounds like he's not ready. Leave it a bit.

i don't understand, sorry, why can't you keep bfing him?

nearlythree · 04/12/2006 12:04

Leave it, he probably hasn't lost his gag reflex yet. My dd2 didn't really take to solids until 8 mo. She just kept on bfeeding!

PinkTinsel · 04/12/2006 12:11

why can't you face expressing? you don't need much to mix with food, just express while your feeding once a day and it'll be more than enough.

agree with hunker though. doesn't sound like he's ready for solids yet.

Ds has fruit such as pear with baby rice in it, he is 7 1/2 months though.

Sorry, not making myself clear. He is a reflux baby, so early solids was recommended by paediatrician. It is the acid that hurts him, he doesn't normally sick up. I have tried using formula just to thin down the puree and I once tried giving him formula to drink. He is fine eating solids when I mix them with water, he enjoys them and drinks loads of breast milk in the day. I started weaning also because he started waking up at night again.
If I use formula, he isn't sick for an hour or two, so it is nothing to do with the actual feeding process.

My baby refluxes too, and I was told to wait! I'd just eliminate the formula for now, he'll be getting what he needs in his bfeeds.

mama my dd had reflux too and solids did nothing at all to improve it til she was on much more solid food at 7/8 months, i'd stand by my initial comment, hold off the solids at least a few weeks. i can't express how much i regret feeding dd solids so early and would never do it again. she has tonnes of intolerances, doesn't eat well and is a skinny little mite. if i were to have another refluxy child there is no way in hell i'd feed that early again.

nearlythree · 04/12/2006 16:57

That bears out what I've been told. Ds is 6 mo and we're just about to start.

Mamadothat · 05/12/2006 12:33

Pink Tinsel, my first son was a reflux baby, much worse than no 2. He wouldn't look at a spoon until after 7 mths and didn't come off pureed food until nearly 2, so I have the other experience. Every child is different.
