hi - DS is 26 weeks on Friday and is fine on his SMA gold. Will be using full fat cows milk in cooking etc but was wondering if these follow on milks are just another marketing ploy etc etc ... i have been sent some samples and wondered whether i should even bother. DS has home made veggie and fruit purees so not too worried about him missing out on vits etc ...

my understanding is that follow on milks are a marketing thing cos they aren't allowed to advertise formula for babies under 6 months so they make follow on so they can have SMA adverts.

ah ha - that makes sense ... won't be swapping then.

I don't think you need to swap, but I use the follow-on milk for the iron, as I'm not always sure my ds gets enough from his diet. It's reasonably varied but he's not much keen on red meat or dark green veg just yet. I think the extra iron is the main advantage of the follow-on.

I definitely think the toddler milks are a marketing con, though.

i asked about this before and was reassured that there is more than enough iron in the 1-6 milk.
apparently the reason the follow-on is cheaper is because the milk proteins are less modified because by 6 months they can take it. i just stuck with the 1-6 because the stuff i used has fish oils in it and i harbour a forlorn and probably utterly misguided hope that this will mean she likes the taste of fish. she certainly does so far, but i've no idea if it's because of her milk.
