What to puree for 5 month old?

My lo has enjoyed apple, banana and carrot so far. Am hoping for suggestions for more to puree. Is it just anything goes with veg and fruit, or are some things to be avoided? Thought about trying broccoli or parsnip. Mashed potato maybe?

sweet potato, butternut squash, peach, apricot, papaya, broccoli, spinach ... nearly anything and everything really, as long as they can be puried. Or mix them up. Best to let them taste as many varieties as possible. The jar foods in supermarkets may give you more ideas too.

pear, courgette, mashed very ripe banana ....

Oh dear! Just tried kiwi with a little rice- you'd think I'd tried to poison him. Much shuddering and gagging. Rapidly replaced with apple and banana but he was so traumatised by being given something he didn't like that he wasn't keen on that either! Too strong and sharp. Thanks for your replys, we'll keep experimenting, maybe with less strong flavours to start with.

oooh - it is all hit and miss. My LO doesn't like carrot but loves pumpkin! that is another one you can try.

Mashed potato is quite bitter on its own, but I think it is better with a green vegetable in it (e.g. brocolli). It's also good mixed with carrot or swede.
Pear is very popular around here.
Carrot and pea is ok, but peas are a big hassle because you need to use a mouli or push them through a sieve to get rid of the skins: a lot of effort for not much food.

What's the best way to cook courgette for puree? I've got some in the fridge.

Kiwi can be allergenic. Certainly I've known kids who were allergic to it. Best left until he's older.

(Um, but so are all the other solids, too, by the way ...)

5 months seems very diddy to be weaning already, but hey what do I know?

taylormama · 22/11/2006 15:29

with courgette - steam or boil until soft and then blend with some of the cooking water until it is the right consistency.

butternut, mash potato, broccoli, pear and banana

I always stuck to those five for the first month or so

DD is 20wks. Likes all the ones you have tried. Parsnip, sweet potato and swede are also firm favourites. Fruit wise she really likes papaya and melon.
