Too early to blw (7mo)

Ds2 is nearly 7mo and ebf. We did blw with ds1 and it was great, he totally got it and we never used purées or anything or spoon fed him. Ds2 is a different kettle of fish. He's a bit rubbish at sitting up, not interested in picking things up and putting them in his mouth while in a sitting position.

Any advice? Just wait? Or spoon feed? I feel a bit like I'm depriving him of food (other than bm) because I'm sticking to my principles of blw. I understand food is fun before 1, he only needs milk etc but anyone got any thoughts on what they would do/have done in this position?

I'd just wait. It's not a magic switch at 6 months, it's average, signs of readiness include sitting up so if not doing that might just not be ready.

I'm exactly the same! My now 10mo didn't want to feed himself (where my now 3 to started feeding himself since 6mo! so I started spoon feeding and he loved it - I don't want to miss the chance of him trying out different food. Out of nowhere he started feeding himself at 9monyhs and he's loving it!! U can't stop him now!
Just follow his lead.. Sometimes the blw culture makes u wanna hate spoonfeeding but what's more important is baby is fed and accustomed to the idea of food!

I agree - no hurry to wean at months. He'll do it when he's ready.

Whoops! At 7 months

DD2 was the same. DD1 took to BLW within a fortnight but DD2 was slower to sit up, slower to pick things up, slower to mouth things. I gave BLW 8 weeks from 26 weeks onwards. Nothing. At 8 months, I gave some purée with finger foods. She took the purée but screwed up her face at every taste. Such a change from DD1 who seemed to LOVE every flavour including octopus in Venice at 11 months. DD2 started feeding herself 8 weeks after starting purées so I switched back to BLW after that.

DD mostly ignored food until she was almost 10 months old, when she demolished a nectarine. She wasn't ready until then, but once she was, she was eating full meals within a fortnight.

I would go against the others and say to try spoon feeding purees. Just to see if he likes it. They will let you know pretty quickly.

Although food is for fun, blah blah, I think introducing flavours and textures is beneficial at this age, and if self feeding isn't working out I think I would go with a spoon. It's really not like you do either finger foods or purees. A mixture is possible.
I'm coming from a slightly different angle, in that my eldest has sn, and is an extreme example, but if I had waited for her to feed herself, she would have been 5. I guess my point is, that although hard-core blw guidelines make a lot of sense for most babies, ime the motor skills and readiness for food aren't perfectly aligned in all babies, and I don't think it's a good reason to deprive a 7 month old the opportunity to taste different foods.
Mind you, dc2 and dc3 (no sn) had no interest in any food, spoon or otherwise, until they were about 8 months, but I did offer from 6 months onwards.

Thanks for all your advice. I think I'm going to leave it for a few weeks as my gut instinct is just that he sung ready. Will see if his coordination/sitting up improves then decide whether to do blw or spoon feeding.
