Government say b/f til LO is 6 months and then start weaning with baby rice mixed with breast milk. I started weaníng DD3 at 5 months because she was showing interest in food and constantly had her fist in her mouth. She's now nearly 7 months, and I've just started introducing lumpy stuff.
Can't really help much more- DDs 1&2 started being weaned at 13 weeks (6 and 3 years ago)because they stopped gaining weight but now looking back, think they were just having slow weeks! So hope other people can give more up-to-date info.

Kellymom section on solids is very very good as is the LLLGB leaflet on starting solids if you have a branch near you, or order it from their main offices if you havent.

All the baby-led weaning stuff is very good as well. Ill try & post some links later if no-on else does...feeding atm

ditto the blw stuff. have a look at babyledweaning.org

it's basically no purees, no baby rice, just wait til they're 6 months and give them what you're having.

most baby books etc will guide you down the baby rice and purees route, slowly introducing lumps and some finger foods.

milk should still be their main food until they are 1 year old.

I waited til just 20 weeks as ds was soooo starving hungry all the time. I found that baby rice didn't mix well with expressed breast milk, it just wouldn't get thick enough to spoon it in. So I started using some formula for mixing with food. Might have been my milk being weird though so give it a go...

started weaning at 5 months as dd fascinated by food. puree fruit and veg, not as smooth as shop brought stuff but i think this is a good thing. add some breast milk if its a bit thick. ithink u shopuld trust your instincts and not worry too much about the latest government dictats, 15 years ago my son was weaning at 10 weeks cos that was the latest guide line he's now a strapping 6' 4" !

I wanted to get to 6 months but ds started waking once, then twice in the night, it upset his sleep (day amd night) and he wa sstarving so we sarted at 21 weeks (5m). Perfect for us IMO. I will also wait as long as poss with next baby and see how it goes. As they are all different I think it's best to take each day as it comes and you'll know when it's right. The later the better, there's no rush and oh god once you start it can be quite time consuming and restricting for a while so don't be in any hurry by any means.
