When does the gag reflex lessen?

DS2 is just over 6mo and we've been weaning for about a week. At the moment im giving him soft foods - ready brek, adult porridge, yogurt, banana - mostly on a pre-loaded spoon. He's had some finger food like broccoli, toast fingers etc.

He's managing to get quite a bit in his mouth and frequently when it hits the back of his tongue he gags/coughs. I know that he's learning to move food around his mouth and that the gag reflex is what makes them chew, but am curious when it lessens? DS1 didn't really eat until 8mo at which point I think the gag reflex wasn't so strong and I don't really remember him gagging this much.
