Help! 7.5 constipated after weaning

Really hoping for some advice on how to proceed with weaning as it is consuming ny thoughts 24/7.

EBF baby. Originally would poo several times a day, resucing to once a week as he got older (but within realms of normal, still soft and easy to pass).

Started weaning at 6 months. Baby led weaning to start. First 2 weeks all was well. 3rd week he suddenly consumed basically everything I gave him. This then led to him being very constipated. No poo for a week and when he did go it took several attempts, caused a lot of pain and was very solid and log like (sorry for tmi).

To get him sorted out I gave him prunes, dried apricots, pear etc. Started giving some by spoon feeding to make sure lots went in too! This worked over several days and he was pooing lots again, resulting in one where it passed easily without any crying. I then thought oh ok, all sorted and proceeded to feed as normal again, still with some prunes etc but not in the quantities given when sorting out the blockage.

We have now had two weeks of him going everyday, usually at least twice ... but back to being very painful and he only manage to push it out if he is not sat on his bottom.

Other info ...

  • he is still having all of his milk feeds (7 in a 24 hr period)
  • he is taking some water from a sippy cup but still not loads yet
  • I have introduced fruit, veg, dairy, eggs and wheat

So I now dont know what to do. I have a doctors appointment for him in 2 weeks time. In the meantime options are ...

  1. Cut right back to just fruit and veg, and slowly introduce eggs, dairy, and then wheat to see if there is anything in particular that bungs him up

  2. Carry on feeding him a variety but really step up on things like pears etc to keep things moving pain free and find out what amount of this sort of thing he needs each day

  3. Give him less food. He was over 10lb at birth and has loved his food so far. I basically give him food until he shows he is no longer interested or full. I absolutely do not force it on him. Maybe the volume he is taking in is just too much for his system to cope with right now?

He is having three meals a day with no snacks and has a full breast feed 45-60 mins before so he is not massively hungry.

Any advice appreciated but it also just feels good to get that all out of my head!

3 meals a day is a lot at 6 months, the current nhs guidelines are to move to 3 meals between 8 and 9 months. I'm no expert, but to me it sounds as if his digestive system is too immature for the volume of food.

Could you try offering food just once a day? If he seems hungry after Bfing, it's fine to meet offering the other breast until he's full Smile

There's some useful information on Bfing and starting solids on Kellymom which you may find useful.
