Weaning & water

How much water should I be giving to a 6 1/2 monthbaby who is just weaning? At the mo she is having 2 course lunch (equivalent to 3-5oz in those avent via pots) with water offered. Sometimes she will only take a sip, sometimes 3oz - typically 1oz. Is this enough fluid? Her stools are a bit firm most of the time - but passable at the moment.

She gags on water - but we are trying to persevere. Should we be trying to offer juice just to try and get fluids up (don't really want to BTW)?

She has a small (2oz) solid tea with milk rather than water.

if she is having enough milk, then don;t stress too much about water.....and don;t give juice if you don;t want to!

DD only started drinking a decent amount of water when she was around 12 months old......and it took a lot of trial and error to find a beaker she liked..the tommee tippee ones made her gag as water came out to quickly for her at the beginning..the avent magic cup was a good one to start with...

if she has just started weaning, milk is still her main source of food & liquid...keep offering the beaker..and when she eats a bit more, there will be fluid in some of her foods...eg in fruits & veg....

if she is not struggling to poo, then i wouldn't worry....

juice will get her used to sweetness rather than fluid intake IFSWIM!

Keep offering the water. Don't make a big thing of her drinking it or not. Let her play with the cup. And don't give juice. No point.

At the moment she is having water in a bottle as I wanted her to get used to water before giving her a spout. Plus I couldn't get the avent ones I wanted. Managed to get some now though - just need to get them washed & then will try.

Should I give water throughout the day? Does it have a 1 hour limit on like milk once it has been in her mouth?

no.......unless the spout gets really claggy with food...i wouldn;'t worry.. give it a wipe!!

i'd offer it with meals only to start with.....that;s what i did with DD and then when she was bigger, offered it to her mid morning with a snack....

I think she may take it better from a cup - she'll associate a bottle with milk.

Just offer it whenever. Leave the cup next to her on the floor when she plays - DS2 picks his up and plays with it and drinks now as did DS1. Both mine love water.

My DD ( now 8 months) associated the bottle (Avent )with milk so tried the magic cups but no go. I bought a different bottle smaller with a hole in the middle that she can hold herself, also has pictures on it. This one has a rubber teat whereas the Avent is silicone. She now associtates that one with water. I started off with milk watered down and then slowly eliminated to milk to just water always from that bottle. This was during the really hot weather ( I had 3 months of it). The water bottle is always round as hunkermunster says she plays with it , picks it up and aims for her mouth ..only negative is that with the bottle the water does leak out. She now loves water and when ill recently I tried juice and water to get sugar in and she refused it ..So did not insist !
