I made a rice meal (risotto) for my 9 month old And he hated it and gagged - is this normal? I didn't blend it...

Babies have a stronger gag reflex than adults so i wouldnt worry about it perse but by 9 months im suprised he cant handle rice.
Was the meal spicy or diff flavors than his normal that could have suprised him?

moomin35 · 21/03/2015 21:41

No it was really bland lol! Yeh I was kind of suprised, he really didn't like it but ive puréed everything up to this point so I don't know if that's why?

Oh ok id go with mashed veg and stewed fruit and gradually make it more lumpy. Then try rice again in a week or so.
Mine really like omlete and bread and butter if you want ro try finger foods.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/03/2015 15:48

moomin has he not had anything other than purees at all?

moomin35 · 22/03/2015 17:17

No - is that really bad?? :-(

Its a bit unusual but just means you can move through the next stages faster.
I would start adding lumps and finger foods so you dont get stuck on purees long term, dont worry if he gags sometimes its quite normal.

purplemurple1 · 22/03/2015 18:14

Cous cous is a good early thing to add aa well i mixed it into the vegetable mash.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/03/2015 18:36

Agree, it's not bad at all, just a bit unusual. At 9 months he should be able to handle most things, how would you feel about offering him a sandwich tomorrow or a banana split lengthways?

Are that gagging is fairly normal too and nothing to worry about Smile

Thanks guys- I'm following annabel Karmel and she seems to not mention introducing lumps and learning to chew until 10 months?

He only just got some teeth too...?

they can chew really well with their gums so you dont need to worry if they have teeth or not. I've not looked at the annabel book, but for a contrast look at baby lead weaning (BLW) which is no purees at all. There seems to be so many different ways to get from just milk to sittting them down to the same dinner as you!

Does she not mention finger foods before 10months either? Mine started with these properly at around 7months when I realised he was picking himself blades of grass to eat so he definatly had the pincer grip sorted.

Honestly its nothing to worry about and now you've tried the rice I would just take the plunge and offer him some more non purees and a few finger bits at lunch and see how he gets on, its a much more fun stage of feeding them.

In my edition of Karmel she mentions finger foods at 6-8 months with some examples. Smile She also suggests mixing rice or small pasta through favourite purees.
