so please tell me the basics - where do I start? DS is 6 months old, I just tried fiving him a bit of boiled carrot on my finger - he kind of nibbled it and pulled a face. Ditto mashed banana and rice. So how often do I try, how many times a day? When should he get a decent portion of food in him by?

He watches me eat intently and mimics me chewing, but does not seem to know how to do it with food in his mouth.

start off with fruit and lightly steamed veg cut into chip shapes so that they can pick it up easily. put them on a plate and let your baby pick it up and put it in his mouth. don't do it for him.

start off once a day, maybe at 11, i do it an hour after a milk feed. watch for any reactions. after a week or so up it to two 'meals' a day, then three.

offer some water with each meal. took my dd a few weeks to drink, but she drinks with every meal now.

have a look at www.babyledweaning.com. it's got lots of info, and links to the original research paper and the wikipedia entry.
