Gagging/sicking

Trying to move my 7mo towards more solid food and less purees, as she gets frustrated when I feed her and wants to do it herself, but she gags so easily!

I know gagging is a part of the process but she actually throws up after she gags. E.g. yesterday she had some puree and I gave her a banana for dessert which she happily had a go at, and then gagged and sicked up all her puree! Terrifying.

Is there any way I can make it easier for her? Or are there any non-gag finger foods? She can't have toast or rusks because she's allergic to wheat. I've tried cucumber but she can't actually get any of it off. She managed melon but then gagged and sicked. The only thing she manages are those Organix corn snacks which essentially melt in her mouth, but I really would like her to have some unprocessed stuff as well. Any advice would be really helpful!

I've been having the same problem with my little one. It's horrible to watch but she doesn't seem that bothered and she is gradually improving. I've found that if I eat at the same time and exaggerate chewing she sometimes copies me. Also smiling at her when she's gagging seems to help her sort it out quicker - reassuring? She is definitely put off by being stared at and manages better when DH is home and we sit at the table chatting instead of focusing on her.

Sorry, just remembered something else I meant to say - the Baby Led Weaning recipe book is great, our DD has done well with patties made out of mince, scrambled egg and thick porridge that she can pick up in lumps.

Gluten free bread? It's what I have and my kids love it can't wait till I get a whole sandwich to myself again
It's pricey but freezes well. I'd recommend the genius triple seeded loaf :)

Dd is just weaning and has also been sick after gagging. She was completely not fussed, whilst her older brother cried and gagged himself watching it! Totally normal and she will soon get the hang of it I'm sure.

Oh, and dried apple is a good finger food I'm finding as good to chew on but unlikely to gum bits off.
