could this be an allergy or does he just not like dairy?

Hi all, hoping someone can help me here...
I'm a bit worried that ds is showing some signs of allergy to cows milk products, but I'm not sure, maybe he just doesn't like the things I've given him?? How can I tell whether to keep going with dairy or to exclude it? Yesterday I tried ds with some cottage cheese. He vomited it all back up, pronto. A couple of weeks ago he had some petit filou and came out in a red rash on his back. Different reactions, but both to dairy. When we were exclusively breast feeding I swapped cow's milk for goat's milk in my own diet and also used colief to help with his tummy pains, so I've had a suspicion that he might find lactose a problem for some time... Any ideas? Milk is sooo useful in a veggie diet, I can't imagine doing without it

It does sound like a possible allergy. But not a severe one, fortunately.

After 12 months of b/feeding my DD1, who was cows milk intolerant, went onto soya milk. We also used Pure olive oil margarine which was pretty good for cooking with as well as a spread.

I'd speak to your GP, he may do tests, he can certainly advise you on calcium supplements etc.

Have a look through the Allergy threads on mumsnet - there are often lists of milk-free food substitutes.

Sounds like an allergy to me. Especially the rash part. I had to cut out dairy from my diet when breastfeeding my dd because she broke out in a rash. When I stopped eating dairy, her skin cleared up. If I ate something by accident, it came back. But, after 4 months of no dairy (and I LOVE dairy) I had an allergy test done on her and it came back negative so I started eating dairy again and she has been fine. How old is he? I would suggest waiting a few months before you try again. Babies often outgrow milk allergies.

thanks chaps. He's almost 7 months (just a few days to go...). I might try the GP - I tried the HV a while back and she told me he was getting tummy pains because I was breastfeeding him too much and should cut down and give more solids (he was just under 6 months then). Hmmm. I ignored her. We hadn't experienced the rash / vomiting then though. I didn't know there was an allergies board here (newbie ) . I'll pop over and have a look - thanks!

my son switched to goats milk formula after breastfeeding ceased and he was fine on it and by about 15 months he`d outgrown his intolerance to the cows milk and anyway goats milk is much better as it doesnt cause so much mucus either
