BLW and formula feeding help! What did you do?

I have a nearly 6 month old DS and planning on starting BLW in a week or so when we get back from holiday. We have fallen into the routine that he has 4 formula bottles a day of approx 7-9oz per bottle (I make up a bottle with 8 oz of water n 8 scoops which more or less fills the bottle) and he tends to drink most of it/ all of it and seems happy after.

So my question if food is for fun till he's a year old so he's not likely to reduce his milk feeds till 9-10 months or so, he's going to need more milk as he gets heavier, so do I need to buy bigger bottles or do an extra feed? But when we where doing 5 feeds the last one before bed he would mostly play with the bottle annoy me and didn't seem drink it.

Don't know if it's relvent but he sleeps well and we don't do a night feed any more. So his feeding times are approx 8am, 11:30am, 3:30pm, 6:30pm to go to bed between 7-8pm. I do wait for feeding queues so that is when he wants to eat I have not forced this routine on him.

Any advice, what did u do with formula feeding and BLW?

You seem to have a very similar routine to my DS. He's now 8 months and we're BLW. Seems to be going ok but he doesn't seem interested in taking less milk at this point. Similarly he doesn't seem to want more as he's got bigger.

I really wouldn't worry about it at this point. Just see how it goes.

My ds (now 6) did pretty much what toast said. DS too, but she wasn't interested in food until she was about 7.5 months.

Yes, same here. DS didn't really eat much at all till 7 months and didn't eat much volume till 9 months, but he didn't want any more milk than he was having before weaning. Just see how it goes.

Thanks, I've been worrying that he's not going to get enough milk according to weight, and I couldn't find how much to give him in the BLW book, wanted to try to avoid having to make up 2 bottles every feed!

I shall try to chill and go with the flow Smile

I generally introduced lunch food first, an hour after a bottle, then about a week later I did toast an hour or so after morning milk- gave morning milk as soon as dd woke at seven.Added a tea after a few weeks.

Generally
7am milk
8am toast
nap
11am milk
12noon lunch
nap
3pm milk
4pm tea
bath
6pm milk
6.30pm bed

Once she got to about 10/11mo I also did a bowl of porridge at bedtime.

Hacked - looks like what I was kinda thinking. I just going to start with just lunch, to start with, as my DP doesn't get back from work 5:30 (and somehow tea always seems ready when DS wants his last bottle! I've got used to cold tea!)
I'm getting excited to start and I think DS is ready as he seems excited about our food but I'd feel better doing it at home rather than at some random holiday cottage, hence starting in a week or so.

My LO is almost three and has always been on the 98th centile so a hungry chap. We FF and did BLW. I echo what everyone else said he was at least 10 months before eating in anything like a decent quantity but certainly never wanted anymore milk and it never effected his weight or sleep.

RibenaBabe · 26/09/2014 20:40

Good to hear that wind, I have been worried that DS might have disturbed sleep because of lack of milk. I'm hoping he'll be fine, as I've been enjoying my sleep Grin
