My EBF baby is 6 months old and we've started weaning her onto solids, she's been having a good variety of foods for a week now, the first poop a day after the start of solids was like ready brek and she's not pooped again till today and I heard lots of grunting and when I changed her it was actual solid poo, how can this be? She still has 8 breast feeds a day and 2 meals, why is it so much firmer and so infrequent?
We tried food a month ago (HV suggested as she slow to gain weight) but she didn't poo for 10 days so I went back to 100% bf until this week when I thought we'd try again.
My older daughter had horrendous constipation resulting in fissures and 2 years on movicol and I'm praying this doesn't go the same way again Confused

Try her with prunes. If she likes them mix them with everything :)

TarkaTheOtter · 20/09/2014 21:40

I second prunes.

Sorry that sounded sarcastic/ flippant. Wasn't meant to be. Worked for a friends baby.

Good luck x

My ds went through some hard and uncomfortable poos at the start of weaning. Wouldn't touch prunes til he was 8-9 months, unfortunately (which did work wonders once he started!).

What got him over the early constipation was increasing his liquid intake. We gave him water with every meal of solids, occasionally expressed bm instead. Once he started drinking (from a Momma straw cup, as opposed to throwing his doidy cup on the floor), his poos were back to normal in less than 24 hours.

Yes I second making sure you offer her plenty of water with her food

That's great thanks, I'm just amazed how quickly her pop has gone from gravy to formed stool!

She has 100ml with each meal. She is dinky for her age, 6 months and 14lb so she's not eating very much

I found the tiniest bit of banana stopped dd up for days. I presume with your history you know the foods to limit but just thought I'd mention.

Poppety · 21/09/2014 18:10

Yes banana, any cereals/breads, apples, mash.....
All the stuff that fills them up!

Avocado is magic. Hummous helps and water with every meal. And try to make sure they get plenty of fruit. At least thats whats worked for us.

Avoid baby rice as it clogs them up! Lots of prunes (you can make your own puree by boiling them for about 10 mins and then blending) and also some water with a little brown sugar added gets them going.
