Baked beans

Are these ok for an 8 month old? I just checked the salt content and it looks pretty high (1.2g per can which is 20% RDA). Would the reduced salt and sugar version be better or are they just full of other rubbish? Thanks xx

I buy own brand reduced sugar/salt baked beans, they have 0.44g of salt per 100g. They don't have any added sweeteners or anything weird instead of the salt/sugar so I'm happy to give them to my DS.

I also use the low salt low sugar ones but must admit that I left it til they were 12 mo before giving them. Although that was possibly cos I did BLW and I couldnt handle the slowness of them picking up every.single.bean individually with their fingers!

I gave my DS normal beans, but he only ate about 1/4 of a tin at a time, and only 1-2 times per week, so it wasn't anything to worry about. I also tried to serve up beans and drain as much sauce off as possible, as it's the sauce which contains the salt.

I did use the reduced salt/sugar once when they were younger. They arent going to eat a full tin anyway

I remember starting a thread about salt in foods when I was weaning. I was advised to only do one salty food a day. So, if I served baked beans I'd avoid supermarket bread iyswim.

Freebuttonbee The one bean at a time thing is the best thing about baked beans. Keeps mine busy for hours. I can clean the entire kitchen while he's at it!

we had the reduced sugar/salt ones anyway so just gave DD those, not at 8 months though, I think she was well over a year. Half a small can. She's 4.5 now and we have far too many baked beans Blush.

I have my baby about 4 beans. He then fated fitr the rest of the day! Really loudly so nobody would believe it was a tiny baby. I haven't dated give him then again.

mrscog · 08/08/2014 09:31

Don't be embarrassed RiverTam, they're an excellent source of protein and not that salty anyway. They're just highlighted because they have added salt. Compared to crisps/ham/bacon etc. I don't really think beans promote a taste for salt in the way some foods do.
