day 1 of weaning - formula versus food

Hi, was thinking about starting DS with weaning this week as he'll be 6mo old at the weekend. In the early days how much milk do you give? Do you start on 3 (food) meals a day or go for one meal and gradually scale up? Was thinking of trying some pureed carrot first...

keep formula feeds the same and give food as extras. I started with food mid-morning and added in very small meals at dinner time and then eventually breakfast time over the period of a few weeks. At 6 months you can also offer finger foods alongside puree (or just give finger foods e.g. BLW).

Do you want to do spoon led or baby led weaning?

I did spoon led and I just started off with a little puréed banana about an hour or so after a bottle or when I was eating. To begin with you may only get a spoonful or two in....

You build up slowly to 3 meals a day.

You may not agree with all she does, but I found the Annabel Carmel useful with weekly planning on how to proceed with weaning. You can get her book from amazon or waterstones.

I'm sure someone will advise about baby led weaning... It's not for everyone - DS is not a big milk drinker and I like to know what he's eating so have gone the spoon led route - but I also hand him food to munch on so I suppose we do a bit of both.

Good luck!

Thanks! This is reassuring - my gut feeling was not to cut down on the milk just yet, so i'm glad that seems to be right. Am starting with purees but want to move onto finger foods within a few weeks. Just wanted to give him a chance to get used to swallowing first.

Milk is still their main source if nutrition for the first year.

Food is mainly for playing with!
