Ds is 16 months old and wont feed himself. He may do a couple of spoonfulls but then shouts 'mummy' or throws the spoon until i take over. Im only worried because my friend whose dd is the same age feeds herself. Im not sure if hes just being lazy.Has anyone else experienced this? thanks

just sit back and dont help at all and he will knock into his head that he gotta learn

belgo · 04/09/2006 08:32

I still sometimes feed my 2.5 year old. He'll soon get to the point when he insists on doing it himself!

CarolinaMoon · 04/09/2006 08:32

does he feed himself with his fingers? What sort of food do you give him?

belgo · 04/09/2006 08:34

16 months is still really young, he's just a baby, they grow up so fast - let him be fed if that's what he wants.

my 16 month old is only just able to feed herself, she doesn't want to do it all the time, she will feed herself some yoghurt in the morning with a spoon but not really any other time in the day. she feeds herself chips and just very recently has wanted to try and use a fork with her chips but only for a couple and then it's back to fingers. I wouldn't worry it's still very young, I think

he will eat finger foods e.g cheese, soilders of bread etc but its proper meals that he wont do. im happy to keep feeding him just didnt know if should be doing more by now. thanks for your advice ladies.

I think you are worrying about nothing. There will always be a child the same age doing something yours isnt!!
Give her foods she can feed herself at one meal and the other meal feed her. It really isnt a big deal.
My DS is almost 2 and eats well with a knife and fork most days, but often reverts to hands especially for yoghurt!!!!

biglips · 04/09/2006 09:00

atm my 23m old dd prefer to use her tongue than her spoon or fingers to eat her yoghurts!! ... she must be having fun!

auntymandy · 04/09/2006 09:34

yoghurts are so fun..best smeared across the table and drawn in!!

CarolinaMoon · 04/09/2006 21:35

ds is 22mo and eats nearly everything with his fingers (pasta, cut-up meat, veg, beans, whatever).

I wouldn't stress about using cutlery yet.

Hi
could you please give me an update on your little one ? I know it has been a long time since the post but I am going through the same thing with my DD ☺️ did he eventually start to feed himself ? If so , at what age ?

lindster · 21/06/2024 12:08

Hi, yes he's now a gym going, bulking 19 year old who doesn't stop eating!!
From what I can remember I took the advice and relaxed , funny I can't even remember this post now yet was so important at the time.
Definitely just relax and let them lead. Your daughter will be just fine ☺️
