Citrus

Can anyone tell me why no citrus while weaning? DD is six months old and we have just started, she seems to be more interested in strongly flavoured foods, without thinking I added lemon juice to some mashed avocado (as I often would while cooking something for DH and I) and she really loved the taste, more than avocado on its own. Did I do wrong? I've since remembered citrus fruit is a no no while weaning, but is this just to do with growing teeth?

I was thinking a little splash of lemon juice on her banana finger food might make her more interested in it, I know young children like sharp/sweet combinations.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Never heard of that one before. Who's told you not to give citrus?

Albiebee · 03/06/2014 21:50

Wish I could remember where I read that Jilted. But a bit more intensive googling seems to suggest an allergy or sensitivity issues due to the citric acid. Sore mouths or nappy rashes maybe? Well, if no one comes along to tell me it's an issue I will continue to experiment!

There are some schools of thought which suggest leaving citrus until baby is at least 9 months, possibly later. I think it is harder to digest?

My dd and ds were the type of babies who were very sensitive to foods such as citrus and they couldn't have it without a reaction until 12-18 months. This included acidic foods like pineapples!! They had silent reflux and food intolerances (which still plague ds even now at nearly 5).

It's not to the same extent as going without nuts or honey until 12months, it's more along of the lines of see how your baby goes and adjust accordingly.

Many babies love and are fine with certain citrus fruits, but others can bring out a reaction ie pineapple or even kiwi fruit. If you see something amiss, leave it for a while.

It's often quite surprising what babies enjoy the taste of- when you move into protein you might find your DD enjoys the stronger types of fish like salmon and mackerel etc.

citrus isnt recommended before 6 months but is fine after that

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/06/2014 22:58

As others have said, citrus is fine from 6 months Smile

afaik it can give some babies a bit of a sore bum (acidic?) but a splash here and there won't hurt, and DD has happily had satsuma segments from about eight months.
