Ds is doing great at weaning, but a day or so ago he had some real problems pooing. Was straining & in tears, eventually managed to go the following morning and we think he was constipated. It wasn't pellets, but well on its way there. Have been offering water lots since, and he had 1oz yesterday. He's not really 'got' the beaker, so given in bottle and calpol syringe.

Is that too little still? Could fruit have caused it? He's 6.5mo and has been on fruit after each meal, 3/day. He's still bf as frequently as before.

ds2 was also unable to drink enough water. We discovered he loved melon and grapes so we stayed away from drying foods like crackers and bread and offered wetter foods like melon and cucumber to get more liquid into him.

Also try other water bottles
we tried various and he seemed to prefer one that had a soft, silicon teat over the hard plastic ones. once he got the hang of that one he was then able to drink from the others.

Having the same problem here... I just offer lots of sips throughout the day as opposed to just meal times.

I also find that partially rehydrated prunes help a lot and luckily DS loves them. I usually sort of tear them or chop them in case of choking.

Also beware of banana - terrible for constipating!

We had problems like this a few weeks ago at 9 months. I've found DD drinks more if I offer the water every 3 mouthfuls of food or so. She's rubbish with a spouted cup, does best with a Doidy cup but also uses a spouted cup with the lid removed. And Ella's Kitchen does a prune purée which got things moving again!

Since then we've hot another stretch of teething so it's loosen up a lot!!

Thanks everyone, I think I got a bit confused about the fibrous fruit thing - I read blueberries helped, but then I found myself sieving them, which probably removed the benefits! So the bits stayed in. I guess the prunes are the same, think perhaps paranoid about blocking him up again

I hadn't thought of giving water whilst feeding, might give that a go. Don't want him drinking so much he doesn't eat /bf though. I guess he'll find the balance though

Roughly how much water are your lo's drinking a day?
