weaning your premature baby

she must be frantically worried. This booklet may help. I gave ds1 (born at 28 weeks) baby rice at 4 months (uncorrected). This was the recommendation at the time

She needs to talk to the paediatician

hope all goes well

they're probably only giving tiny amounts

Yeh there only giving her small amounts. Will it do her damage being given solids this early?

does your friend's sister have any idea of the weaning guidelines? if not, i would find a way to unobtrusively get the document below and this in her hand. gawd i would kick up an unholy fuss via the official complaints channels at the hospital. surely bloody nurses in charge of babies should know better!

milk has a lot more calories any baby can use instead of effing babyrice. why in hell's name do they thing wallpaper paste is appropriate for a baby's gut! how medieval!

kiskidee · 17/08/2006 15:23

more calories and nutrition! sorry so annoyed.

I'm confused by your message. Is the lo 3months old uncorrected for prematurity or is she now three months old corrected ie 14 weeks to make her full term plus 3months?

If the first then I would be concerned, if the second then less worried as I think that the guidelines for weaning prems varies a bit. Either way she needs to speak to the paediatrician in charge of her lo's care. It does sound totally bizarre to be tube feeding and starting to wean.

DTDs were born 5 yeasr ago at 27wks. The advice for full term babies at the time was 4-6months. For DTDs we were told that the earliest to wean was 4 months plus half the period of prematurity, but by 6 months at the latest.
To explain 4months=17wks. They were 13wks prem, so we had to add 6.5wks. This mades our window for weaning 23.5wks-26wks.

Can't comment on what the current advice is though, as the guidlines for full term babies has obviously changed, let alone premmies. If it is similar to what it was it is probably a little early but not drastically so if I interpret your message correctly (baby born approx 6 months ago?).
