Thomcat · 15/08/2006 20:59

Can I give it to her?
I made some a while ago as bought ten tonne of mince at costco so made some mince and swede and have frozen it.
Can I give it to her?
If not shall I bin it as already been frozen a couple of months, if not more.
I eat things that have been frozen far longer then they say it's ok but that's me. Don't want to make DD2 ill.

I started giving my ds beef mice after 6 months - it's highly recommended as it's rich in iron. It's also a lot easier for them to take to than blended beef etc. My little one loved mince, swede and potatoe and then mince and tomatoe with some pasta.

BrookeandTaylorsmummy · 15/08/2006 21:04

I give it to my ds and he's 6.5 months so should be ok, he loves it!

Thomcat · 15/08/2006 21:07

Excellent.
Thank you.

Does it matter if it' sbeen frozen for a few months already?

Please say no, please say no, it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter, does it???

doesnt matter about being frozen thomcat..I do mince with pasta for dd and we also get the costco ten tonne...lol

Mum2FunkyDude · 15/08/2006 21:11

Beef mince is good if you can get her to eat it. I think for frozen meat it is 6 weeks, you might want to check this as it is only a guideline I got from a weaning book.

Quootiepie · 15/08/2006 21:14

can they not choke on the little bits?

CountTo10 · 15/08/2006 21:15

I always use the frozen kind - I also use other frozen mince for other meats as I think it's the ideal way of introducing it to them

Nemo1977 · 15/08/2006 21:16

quootiepie..as yet dd hasnt and she is just 8mths. Will say she has a very good chewing motion..if that makes sense

Mum2FunkyDude · 15/08/2006 21:16

I sneak 1 teaspoon of mince per 2 ice-cube veg...he does splatter sometimes however, chicken seems to go down easier?

BrookeandTaylorsmummy · 15/08/2006 21:19

Just checking me baby cookbook.................well it says 6 weeks but I have used it over that time and touch wood little man is ok!

CountTo10 · 15/08/2006 21:19

Quootiepie - mine never had any problem with it and if anything I think it helps sometimes to have that little bit of texture as it helps develop the chewing muscles etc

hulababy · 15/08/2006 21:25

At 8 months I'd have definitely thought it'd be fine. DD was off purees and onto lumps and finger foods. And that was with no teeth. Never had any problems with choking, although I obviously never just left her own her own when eating so young.

Not sure on the date/length of time frozen Thomcat. Was the mince frozen or fresh when you bought it?

Quootiepie · 15/08/2006 21:27

ok, thanks. Sorry for hijacking thread!

Thomcat · 15/08/2006 21:30

I made it with fresh mince and then froze it all the same day.
But it's been more than 6 weeks in the freezer.
Oh it'll be fine, won't it, yeahhhhhhhh.

CountTo10 · 15/08/2006 21:30

not hijacking, diversifying

Quootiepie · 15/08/2006 21:33

then... are you sure they wont just swallow the little bits and choke?

CountTo10 · 15/08/2006 21:33

hey whenever i was in doubt about these things i used to ask my mum and she always used to give me the line 'in my day we just fed you anything and everything, never did you kids any harm blah blah'. It's nice getting some insight from others doing it now!!!

CountTo10 · 15/08/2006 21:34

defo - i used mince a lot with my little one and never had any probs, especially as he didn't cut his first tooth till nearly 9mths - can't say the same about grapes though!!!

Quootiepie · 15/08/2006 21:38

DS seems to little to eat all these things! and I had better wean in 4/5 weeks!

Thomcat · 15/08/2006 21:38

DD2 has gagged a couple of times and I've scooped the food out with my finger. Not worried about choking on soft foods no hon. But if you keep on a might start!!!!!

CountTo10 · 15/08/2006 21:45

Just wait till they're old enough to start feeding themselves and you have to persuade them that a mouth can only hold a certain amt of food at any one time!!!!!

DanielMummy · 16/08/2006 11:09

My baby cookbook by Sara Lewis says you can freeze minced beef for 3-4 months, but I'm not sure whether it means raw rather than cooked.

My baby first had beef mince at 7 months. I made him cottage pie and spaghetti bolognaise.

MrsBadger · 16/08/2006 11:11

Quootiepie how old is your ds?

Bozza · 16/08/2006 11:13

it really will be fine thomcat. Go for it.
