Splash mat for under high chair

What do you use under your high chair in a room with carpets? I have a pale carpet in the living room, and while I guess some mess is unavoidable, I'd like to avoid mess every day if possible. And no, feeding in a different room isn't possible unfortunately.
So far I've had the following thoughts:
oilcloth liquids would run straight off onto carpet. And be bulky
sheet/fabric thing liquids would soak through, though fold up nicely and wash easily.
shower curtain??
Maybe an oilcloth base with velcro on it and sheets also with velcro which I detach and wash?
Am I overcomplicating it? Help!

Oilcloth from John Lewis. It's great and doubles up as a table cover when we're crafting. One of our best buys.

There has never been a spill big enough to run off the oilcloth but we always have kitchen roll to hand.

Yes, overcomplicating! Big piece of oilcloth will be fine. I don't remember liquids running off particularly, and it's very easily cleaned.

Also really easy to clean, quick shake in the bath and a wipe with a cloth and some antibac.

How about a plastic tablecloth?

Folded over big beach towel - shake out a few times then chuck in washer. Or a washable cheap shower curtain - saves wiping.

Picnic blanket. Waterproof back, fabric top. Pretty big.

I had the same dilemma and used a shower curtain that wasn't 100% waterproof but could be put in the washing machine and would dry quickly. The carpet stayed the same colour and when DD2 starts weaning I think I'll use it again, even though in this house we have tiles. It was just so easy!

Oil cloth here. I've got tropical fish at the moment, but it needs replacing as the highchair's made a couple of small tears.

The only liquid that gets on it is water and the occasional drip of milk. It's weetabix that's a bugger to get off

Oh, and I've chucked it in the washing machine a couple of times on 30. At £3 a metre, and you only really need a metre, I can afford for it to get a bit trashed!

I got the large splash mat/tablecloth thing from jojomamanbebe. It's about £12 iirc and machine washable so I just shake it off and bung it in the washer. It's great for messy play too. Stupid phone won't let me do a link though

I used the ELC craft-mat sheet things which I also got when they had one of their twenty per cent off craft products sales. It therefore cost about a couple of quid. Easy to shake down and wipe off and if it got too horrible, can easily be replaced. I have had a few over the years and it proved brilliant when on holiday in October/November as an extension to the doormat of our self-catering cottage (we were by the beach so heaps of sand and muddy boots). It meant the cleaning up at the end of the week was much easier - just folded it up and took it home to wash.

IKEA have a large clear piece of plastic which is brilliant!

I got a wipeable plastic sheet specifically for the mess of weaning in Poundland in the babysection.
