6 months will only eat fruit pots

Hi my lo is 6 months and has Ben eating 3meals a day n having afternoon bottle bed time bottle and one in the night but all of a sudden only wants fruit pots n not really wanting milk iter any advice please this is my first child thanks

Hi Jade. 3 meals is a lot for a 6 month old, so have you thought about maybe cutting back on the food and offering more milk in the day time? At 6 months they should still be having a minimum of 500-600ml of milk in 24 hrs - is he having this in his 3 bottles? This recommended minimum is to ensure they are still getting the calories/nutrients needed whilst getting going with food. If you offer food less frequently then you may find your LO gets back to drinking more milk.

Have a look at the NHS page on weaning for more info about how many meals they should be having by what age.

If you keep offering fruit pots then that will be what your baby will get used to eating. Offer a wide range of food and don't worry if it's rejected a few times before it is accepted or tried. Try and see weaning as an opportunity for your baby to experience new flavours and textures rather than about getting lots of food into them. They don't need to be eating lots until 12 months ish, so you have plenty of time to build up to this.

It might be that he is under the weather or teething.. They often go off food then.. Try not to worry as long as he is getting the fluids in his appetite will come back

How did you get to 3 meals a day for a 6 month old? That's far too much, really it is. At 6 months old they should still just be experiencing different tastes and textures not eating like an adult.

As others have said, milk should be the main part of their diet at this age. The poster above has given a good link and the other poster has given the guideline daily milk intake amounts. Cut back on the food so hit child is hungry enough to have/want the milk.

I'm afraid I don't even know what a "fruit pot" is. Is it a yougart?

I disagree completely with the above. Mine have just turned 7m.
3 meals a day is fine at 6 months, not all will manage it, but if they do and want to, then it's progress. It can be dovetailed in with gradually cutting back on milk feeds. Mine have cut down milk to morning and night.
FWIW I'm not doing BLW so maybe it's entirely different with that approach.
My DD much prefers fruit pots, given a choice, but will usually take a variable amount of savoury first. I think it largely depends on whether she likes the taste (on that day!) of what she is offered. DS (twin) is entirely different and will eat almost anything.
I find that giving DS something to hold in her hand helps, she seems to like to feel as if she is doing it herself. I will usually give her a rice cake, carrot stick, toast finger etc as well as spoonfeeding. I hold off the fruit pot if I can until after.
I find tastes change daily. One day she will take a home cooked dish with gusto, and the next day reject the same thing. Same with pouches and jars. They are very fickle at this age while learning about taste and texture.

Feeding 3 meals a day isn't recommended though Bender. In the current nhs guidelines they recommend "moving to 3 meals a day between 8 and 9 months". That's for all babies, regardless of how you feed them.

Ok I take your point, mine are heading now for 8 months, but I'm pretty sure they were at/almost at 3 meals a day by 6m.
Guidelines are just that, guidance, not rules and all babies are different.
I'm sure the guidelines will have changed again within the next 10-20 years, and we'll all be rolling our eyes at how our own kids are weaning their offspring.

Of course I puree all my own from scratch because I have all the time in the world to do this

Agree with other posters. Cut one meal at least and try mixing a veg with fruit ie parsnip and pear, apple and swede......my ds loved the sweet and savoury mix!

I thought so. I certainly didn't purée my own fruit for DD, mind you. We did BLW so no purées at all.

You take it away and offer it again another time, safe in the knowledge that, at this age, they are getting what they need from milk.

If you swap it for something different, even a six month old will learn that refusing food makes it turn into something better.
