milk intake and weaning

My DS is 20wks and im starting to think about getting ready for weaning (to start at around 26 weeks). Lately he has reduced the amount of milk he is taking and although im sure its a phase, it got me thinking about the amount of milk he needs whilst weaning.

Assuming that at first, the amount of milk they need/take is the same, but less at 1yr old, how do i know what to give and when? How much food does he need to be taking before milk feeds are reduced? Or does it just happen naturally?

I'm probably over thinking this!

We dropped from 5 bottles to 4 (dropped lunchtime bottle) at 8 months once our son was onto 3 meals, and we've just dropped the 4pm bottle at 9 months - by accident as Christmas dinner was late so there wasn't time to fit everything in!
It wasn't a 'natural' dropping for us as my son will eat and drink for 24 hours straight with seemingly no off-switch, so I just dropped them and assumed all was well when it didn't make any difference to his mood.
