Tommee tippee cup - help!

DD is hating every single sippy cup I am placing in front of her, and we've tried a wide variety (read: pretty much every cup on amazon). The Doidy is great buy not practical for when we are out and about. Everyone raves about the basic TT sippy with the handles so I got one but I'm really struggling to open the bloody thing. Even DH struggles with it. Am I just being useless/weak, or is there some trick to it... Or have we got a defective one? I feel so daft asking how to open a cup!

They are a complete bitch to open (well, mine is so I assume from your comment this is 'normal'). Slightly easier with spout up to reduce vacuum, but not much.

My LO who is also crap with cups apart from the doidy, which is only really any use in the highchair with a meal. My best success so far has been with a Nuby silicon spout one. Santa is bringing 4 more different cups to try though :)

Thanks adagio. I'm thinking of trying a straw cup as the sippys are just not working for her. We got a Nuk silicon spout one with Mickey Mouse on it , tried it once and now just the sight of it has DD bawling! Not sure if its the cup or Mickey that brings on that reaction.

The TT one IS a complete pain - but I still like them.

Definitely have spout up for opening & closing lid. I've found the best way to open them is to hold the cup & handle in my left hand (I'm right handed), angled down. Then I use my right thumb under the sticky-out lip of the lid and my fingers on top. Then I just push until the lid pops up. I have to admit sometimes the lid still does go flying!

I've given up with mine - I end up swearing at the bloody thing every time I try and open it.

I forgot to take it to my Mum's the other day so had to use a normal beaker - my son took more from that in one go than he had from the sippy cup in a month, and was happier drinking from that than he is from the sippy cup as well. So I'm just going to use a beaker from now on I think.

Glad I am not the only one! I think beakers and open cups are the way to go and just carry round a cup and water for when we are out.

I the the TT sippy cups for the same reason and we are trying to transition to NUK straw cups with limited success as a result.....

However, I can get the lid off by hooking the lip on the edge of the sink and yanking it down hard by the handles. Can you try anything like that? (like using a bottle opener).

I bloody hate having to wash it for the exact same reason. I end up using a tea towel to help get a grip on it without hurting myself. It's a bloody pain but DD does like it. I'm glad I'm not the only one...

Ah yes, fresh, the edge of the sink manoeuvre has been attempted on our worktop. I managed to take a chunk out of the old marble countertop that we inherited from the previous owners. DH was not amused. Haven't tried a bottle opener…

Oh dear! I don't literally mean use a bottle opener (please don't try that!), it was just a comparison for the whacking it in the sink method ;)

The other reason I hate the damn TT cups is that my babies swallow loads of air with them and end up with really bad wind. If you try drinking from one yourself, you do end up swallowing lots of air, even with it tipped right back. Hate the damn things so much, just wish I could find a decent alternative!

They are a complete pain. I do it upside down over the sink or outside if we're out. Hold one handle with your little finger and one with your thumb, use your other hand to push down on the lip thing and off it pops.

Totally agree with opening the spout both to put on and off the lid.

Just remember though - this absolute pain-in-the-arse element to getting the lid off means that you know without doubt your DC will never be able to open it by mistake

Use your thumbs!

Hold the cup upright by the handles with the lip of the lid facing you and push up on the lip of the lid with each thumb side by side. And you have to have the spout out.

And as for trying another cup, we liked the Baby Cup which look like little shot glasses ahem

Thanks for all the tips! I still end up with deep ridges in my thumbs/fingers that are bloody painful when I do finally get to manage the thing off. I do like the idea of the shot glasses (which will be put to good alternative uses if DD does not get on with them!).

Just had a nightmare wrestling frozen food out of the Nuk Annabel Karmel silicone cube tray thingy. Am beginning to think that I am either useless at this weaning stuff, or that manufacturers don't actually give their products to real mums to try out. Arrghhh!!!
