Potato

My little one has rejected potato on its own (twice about a week apart) and also with broccoli during the first couple of weeks of weaning. I mashed it with some expressed milk, as I had read it wouldn't work well in the blender. Its now about 7 weeks since I started weaning and I'm at the stage of being about to introduce fish and red meat. But the recipes in my book all tend to be baby versions of shepherds pie or fishermans pie. Do you think its worth giving these a go, or is best to steer clear of potato after the 3 rejections.

Very few babies are actually allergic to potato...it's one of the foods even people on exclusion diets can normally have.

I'd keep trying it if I were you.

What does the HV say?

tiktok · 29/06/2006 16:27

BTW, how old is he?

LIZS · 29/06/2006 16:38

Is it freshly cooked or frozen/thawed . Like the pureeing I found that freezing didn't help the texture. You may find he'll take it better with other , stronger flavours but if you want to use it just do a higher proportion of other veg he prefers(such as carrot and parsnip) to potato. otherwise cook the fish/meat and use in recipes as you presumably have already for chicken or substitute with pasta or rice.

Thanks tiktok. I haven't tried asking the HV yet. He'll be 7 months in just over a week's time.

There's been a couple of others that he hasn't been over-keen on such as swede and broad beans, but he really turned his nose up at the potato.

My ds1 hated potato until he was 4. Try squash instead, and pumpkin and swede when they are in season. Babies have naturally sweeter tastes than us so your lo may prefer them.

TooTicky · 29/06/2006 16:42

Oh, sorry, just read he didn't like swede much. I can't enthuse enough about pureed lentils though - all mine have adored them, especially with garlic.

DanielMummy · 29/06/2006 16:43

Thanks Lizs. Freshly cooked. I've tried both steaming or boiling. Yes chicken I served with pasta.

He does like broccoli alone which is the one combination I had tried, but yes I'll try it again with some of the others.

just started weaning ds2 4 month and have already burnt to saucepans try to stew fruit. Are they sure you cant live on fluid for the rest of you life

DanielMummy · 29/06/2006 16:49

Thanks Tooticky. He loves butternut squash, haven't tried pumpkin yet. He also likes sweet potato, so yes quite a few options. I haven't tried making lentils yet, or using garlic. But he wasn't that keen on the Babylicious lentils and veg meal, but maybe because potato was one of the ingredients.
