4 Months + Baby Food

MrsLovebucket · 28/09/2013 09:57

Our DS is only 3 months but just thinking ahead at the moment and already confused.

Was being nosy at the baby food in the supermarket yesterday and there were some listed as 4 months +

I know that weaning before 6 months is not advised but can you give these packs (think they were fruit based Ella's Kitchen pouches) in addition to normal milk from 4 months rather than instead of the milk or is it totally pointless?

The law has not changed with medical advice. So certain companies still advertise from four months with is unethical of them. Weaning early has no health benefits but could be harmful.

Wait there is no need to rush weaning. Breast milk/ formula should be there sole source of nutrition till 6 months and their main source for a while afterwards

Totally pointless, it's just a scam to get you to part with money and potentially at the detriment of your baby's health. Much better to wait Smile

Have you read the mn weaning info? It's very goodSmile

There are also some people who are told for medical reasons (reflux usually) to wean early. But even then, the evidence is sketchy and in our case it was totally pointless, DS just wasn't ready.

If you can wait, you're following the guidelines for DC's health, saving money on food and sparing yourself the extra job of prepping and cleaning!

Yes, the law hasn't changed to reflect medical advice, so they can advertise foods as suitable from 4m+. First weaning foods such as fruit and veg purees are not as calorie or nutrient dense as breast or formula milks, so there is no benefit to weaning early.

I totally assumed that it must be ok from 4 months onwards simply as an extra to the milk. I'm in no rush to start weaning so happy to wait to the 6 month mark but I'd say if I hadn't read info on here I might have thought nothing of picking up a pack or two before then. Scary!

Thanks!

And that's exactly why they label it in that way.

Glad you found the info in here useful Smile
