Hi,
My 25 week old boy who is exclusively BF had creamed rice for breakfast this morning at 10am (first introduction to any kind of dairy) and he had BM at 12 but between 1.30 and 2.30 he got violently sick 4 times. it was a thick yellow colour and it was EVERYWHERE but after a long nap and some BM and carrot and his usual baby rice throughout the rest of the day all went fine since. We are 2 weeks into weaning, is this a common reaction to dairy or was the creamed rice too rich for him? Any advice on how to go about the second taste of dairy please? Many thanks.

Usually an allergy doesn't react the first time as you need to have had an initial exposure to then react. That's not to say it couldn't be a diary problem! Maybe wait a week, try again and if same happens see dr for help.

Does he get unsettled if you eat dairy OP?

No this is the first time he is shown any king of illness and I'm vegetarian so I eat a lot of dairy every day. He's also had a runny nose and a bit of a cough since yesterday too so maybe the two issues are linked, what do you think?

Hi - my DS had a cow's milk protein allergy but his reaction on 1st exposure to dairy was very different to that (hives, swollen nostrild etc), though he was EBF and I had been eating dairy throughout. My DD had a similar reaction to what you describe when I gave her a carton of formula for the first time. I tried again a few days later (thinking it was a coincidence) and the same thing happened. I think it was too rich for her tummy. Was the vomit smelly or just like the rice had bounced straight back up (sorry - gross questions!!). My experience with allergies was it came out almost the same way as it went in, whereas with the formula it was really smelly, like adult vomit, as if it had been fermenting away in her poor wee tummy. In the end i gradually introduced formula to her by mixing it with EBM (slowly increasing proportion of BM to formula) and she was fine. Fingers crossed it was just that!
