(basic questions!) frozen puree containing chicken

HopAndStop · 11/06/2013 12:43

Do I defrost it in the fridge, microwave or by leaving it out at room temperature, and can I warm it in a bowl of boiling water or will that count as re heating chicken (homemade puree)

Also how long can I leave puree frozen for before it's eaten/ needs chucking, and can I re freeze half the amount after defrosting it or not

Sorry if it's silly questions!

I think you're supposed to reheat until its piping hot, then leave to cool. I never bothered doing this with veg pureed, just the ones with meat in.

Not sure how long you can keep in the freezer, but don't re-freeze after defrosting. Freeze into ice cube trays or something small and decant into freezer bags, then only defrost what you need.

And I'd defrost in the fridge, or just nuke in the microwave, but only because I'd probably forget about it if I left it on the side.

Doesn't matter how you defrost it, slowly in the fridge or quickly in the microwave.

What matters is you heat it to piping hot and eat it as soon as it's cooled enough.

It's hanging around at warm room temp. that really causes trouble.

Remember if a bug makes you ill it's optimised to multiply at 37°C

Keeping your sausage roll warm on the radiator makes you very ill (my poor DSIS learnt this the hard way as a teen).

however you defrost it, it should be heated to piping hot and then let it cool a bit before serving. You arent supposed to refreeze after defrosting so it is best to freeze each portion separately so you dont have too much waste.

Don't know the age of your DC, but he/she can handle lumps, adding a small handful of frozen peas is a good way to quickly cool down food and adds veg :)
