Anyone else had the same and are pouches really that bad?

Mine was the same. I think the commercial food had a very smooth, even texture that he found easier to start with.
Once he got the hang of chewing, he preferred real food.
He's 9 months now and has two teeth. He eats cubes of cheese, bits of egg, ham sandwich, pasta twirls, bread and hummous and bits of whatever we're having.
I wouldn't worry about it. He'll be getting most of his nutrition from milk at the moment anyway.

You could try mixing real pureed food with the pouch if you want him to get used to lumpier stuff. I sometimes put ground up cooked chicken in a veggie sauce from a pouch, goes down very easily.
