My DD is 20 weeks, so we won't be weaning for a while. I know lots of people want to wean early, but I'm wondering when you need to have introduced food by? What if she's not showing signs by 6 months?

Have you considered baby led weaning. You can put food in front of her from 6 months, if she is ready she might try to eat it, if she isn't she will just throw it about or ignore it or play with it. That way you don't have to stress you are leaving it too late, as you are giving her the option of weaning and it is up to her to decide. Most babies are ready at approximately 6 months although the amount they eat at that stage isn't much and then at 8 or 9 months they seem to get the idea more that eating satisfies hunger and isn't just a fun messy game you get to play three times a day!

I'd start offering food st around 6 months, whenever she shows the signs of being ready to start solids. She'll eat when she's ready. DD didn't eat until she was 9 months old; DS was ready at 24 weeks. I know a couple of babies who didn't eat solids until they were one.

I really recommend you read "My Child Won't Eat". Offer food from 6 months, but don't worry if they're not into it.

Have you read why delay solids on Kellymom Bora?

This article on askmoxie is very good to, although it is American so some things are different for example it says that the guidelines have been not to wean before 6 months since 2005, whereas in the UK this has been the advice for over 10 years.

No, I hadn't seen thy article - thanks!

I'm fully intending to do BLW!

Thanks all

My Child Won't Eat book is fab, I agree.

It's very likely she'll have taken the decision out of your hands by 6 months. It's very rare to have a baby who isn't interested in solids at all by this age even if it's just curiosity.

TBH DS barely ate anything until he was 22 months - I agonised over it! - but nothing worked until he was ready himself and he just decided one day that actually he did want to eat and now you can't fill him up! Confused He was a healthy weight during this time and still is at 4.
