Ds is 11 week old, bottle fed, weighed 14lb 2oz 2 week ago. Just want to know when others started weaning their babies.

6 months says the World Health Organisation and MNers will pounce on you like wild cats if you do it earlier Grin

starlover · 23/04/2006 22:46

actually the WHO recommends 6 months but also says that some babies need it earlier and that mothers should be given relevant help/advice

and yes, I have read the report

starlover · 23/04/2006 22:46

but not as early as 11 weeks! lol shouldn't be any earlier than 16 weeks

lewsmummy · 23/04/2006 22:50

Don't worry i'm not planning on doing it yet just wondered when to start.

Current Government and WHO recommendation is 6 months, for a variety of pretty valid reasons.

I weaned DD at 6 months and DS at 7 months.

my h.v asked if we were thinking about it when ds was 3months old.
guess she just wanted to give advice earl yon.
i'd say it's best to think about it early as then you'll be prepared and know how to go about it when the time comes.

If possible just wait until as near to 6 months as you can, it will make your life so much easier. I did DD at 15 weeks and DS (just) at 6 months...it has been so much easier. He can chew bits of food, he can sit up easily, he is intersted in feeding himself. I guess i was just a lazy mummy and felt that feeding him boobie for as long as possible was deffo the way forward. HTH.

I have an interest in this as DS is 22 wks. Our HVs all said from 17 weeks, but most of the literature I looked at said 26.

In the end I searched the web and found the following sites which specified 26 wks:

\link{www.sndri.gcal.ac.uk/mims/Weaning.pdf\other related site}
\link{www.eatwell.gov.uk\government advice}

However I did find a Department of Health leaflet, published in August 2005, which states that solids can be introduced from 20 weeks - but not before. See
\link{www.dh.gov.uk/assetRoot/04/11/70/83/04117083.pdf\dept of health leaflet}

I had decided to hold out till then, but in the end I weaned DS at 19 weeks. At birth he weighted 10lbs 2oz and I breastfed him to 17lbs, but when he started snacking 3 times a night, I caved in and got out the handblender.

You can only beat yourself up about so many things...

HTH!

My DD2 is 13 weeks nearly 15lbs 12 ozs and breastfeed, I'm in no hurry to wean her. DD1 was given food at 5 1/2 months hopefully I'll get to that with DD2.

My DS had his 8 month check today and I was asked what age I weaned him to which I replied 6 months as currently recommended. I have a 3 year old daughter who was weaned at 4 months (As recommended at the time) and when the HV asked me which one was easier I replied my daughter. She informed that most of her second time mums agreed, I am hoping to have another baby at some point and I have to say I will not be waiting until 6 months next time!

lucykate · 24/04/2006 21:30

ds - 7mths, he's now 11mths. he wouldn't eat from a spoon any earlier, so i just waited until he was ready.

dd - 4mths, she's now 4. this was when the advice was 4mths but it was also because i went back to work full time when she was 5 mths and i wanted to be the one to do the weaning. with ds, it didn't matter that it was later as i've taken the full year maternity leave this time

ruthydd · 25/04/2006 09:46

I have 2 children similar ages to Wembley's except that I found ds2 (weaned later) much easier. Straight onto finger foods instead of all that purree-ing palava
